A Chemist in Boston

A Chemist in Boston. Monday, December 20, 2010. Just a short update. It finally started snowing in Boston. The city embraced the white flakes with open arms. The sub-zero degrees we had here for a couple of weeks made the snow catch pretty quickly. The river, slowly freezing for days, turned fluffy white with wet patches. Yes, it is going to be a white Christmas after all. Posted using BlogPress from my iPAD. Posted by The Mad Chemist. Saturday, December 11, 2010. Why don't I write more? So as I said at ...

A Chemist in Boston: January 2010

http://www.godisachemist.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

A Chemist in Boston. Sunday, January 24, 2010. Another week has gone by, and time really flies. I have started to organize a collaboration with another lab at MIT and hopefully this will speed up my research. I have taken a two-day course in powder X-ray diffraction (after I did not take a course for ages! I measured some samples and participated in lab clean up. This was my professional week in a few lines. But this week just disappeared! Posted by The Mad Chemist. Sunday, January 17, 2010. Or finally h...

A Chemist in Boston: December 2009

http://www.godisachemist.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

A Chemist in Boston. Sunday, December 27, 2009. Christmas is over - at last! Christmas is finally over, and the city is going back to normal. In Starbucks near my house they finally stopped playing non-stop Christmas music and went back to quiet jazz in the background. The T is running more frequently again (and not one train every 30 minutes). The traffic returned to the streets and people can be seen again. Work was a little slow this week, but it is understandable, since MIT was practically empty this...

A Chemist in Boston. Sunday, February 28, 2010. Sometimes it's just too much. The long hours, the stress. This week was just crazy. I have worked hard and long, and I still cannot say if I've got exactly what I want or not. This upcoming week should not be much different, it will be as crazy as the previous, with synthesis, measurements, and more. Getting used to living here still requires more work! Posted by The Mad Chemist. Monday, February 22, 2010. Oops - forgot again. Dani and Maayan spent 2 nights...

A Chemist in Boston. Sunday, September 19, 2010. Im back - or am I? So some of you might wonder where is the weekly post I have promised? You know what, a biweekly post instead? As you might understand, work is progressing at an agonizing slow rate, but I guess it will have to wait until I feel better. Ps We would like to convey our best wishes to Dani and Maayan for the birth of their beautiful girl - Yarden. May you have only happiness with her. Posted by The Mad Chemist. A Chemist in Boston: August 2010

http://www.godisachemist.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

A Chemist in Boston. Friday, August 20, 2010. 3 agenda points (or - whats between books, bugs and flip-flops). So there have been a few topics that I contemplated about in the last several weeks. Nothing too existential, but topics non the less. And well try to keep them alphabetically ordered. The real people of the book are those who spend their commute reading (with or without earphones playing music) instead of texting or listening to music on their phone's loud speaker as if to annoy everyone around.

The Maple Shekel: October 2011

http://themapleshekel.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Monday, October 31, 2011. Guest Post for James. On James' blog he sometimes has guest posts from survivors of orgo courses. So I wrote one. Like a good husband he humored me an read it, but I don't think he'll post it. So I'll post it here. (Oh and Joel, I'm still thinking of one for your blog). Since you seem to like getting stories about people surviving orgo, I thought I'd tell you mine. You know what it was like? Just when I had giv...

A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Monday, October 29, 2012. Law and Order takes a Commerical Break. So I went to the court house. Met my lawyer. He handed in my Citation and I waited with all the other sheep to be booked. I could hear the conversations around me and it was clear that no one EVER did anything that was their fault. While I was waiting, the security guard in awe asked "Is that your attorney? Apparently my google-fu worked out. Thursday, October 25, 2012.

A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Thursday, March 5, 2015. To my husband on inviting people to Saturday AM breakfast at our house. With your support I just said No to a massively important family event because the baby will be only 3 weeks old. I feel like the biggest jerk ever. But I realize, I need to be saying no more often. A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Tuesday, August 5, 2014. A letter to a student. You seem like the kind of person who needs a reminder every once in a while. So I decided to write you this email restating the things we talked about so you can re-read it when you get intimidated and need to refocus. And 2) they are a bad teacher. Are you satisfied with your depth of understanding of them and your depth of knowledge? I can remember in my senior year my chem academic advi...

The Maple Shekel: David

http://themapleshekel.blogspot.com/2014/05/david.html

A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Our friend David drove all the way from Rohovot to visit us after work on Wednesday. I am grateful to his wife Galia for looking after their two kids so he could come for a visit. It seems like yesterday we were going to their wedding and David was walking up to the hoopa with a big silly grin on his face. Alex showed off his new trick for David which he had figurerd out only minutes before he arrived: clapping.

A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Friday, May 16, 2014. I also took a photocopy of the infamous reaction where I first go the nano-stars of David. I will use it a teaching tool of how much detail should go into your experimental sections. ESPECIALLY when doing exploratory chemistry. I have a complete, but rather brief write up for the reaction and I paid for my brevity with a year of my life, trying to reproduce that beast. And I love him for it. I am busy, so the posts...

A scientist finds herself first in the Holy City then in Music City. Tuesday, September 27, 2011. The problem with distinctive clothes. When my first pay cheque came in last month, I went shopping for some work appropriate clothes and in one short visit to the TJMaxx, got three shirts. My favorite of them, I have worn it exactly twice. It is extremely distinctive, funky and makes me look far more sophisticated than I actually am. Everyone is going to think I have one outfit!
