greenjottings: May 2014
http://greenjottings.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Friday, 2 May 2014. I’m trialling two outdoor begonias from the Dutch company, Beekenkamp – Waterfall and Beauvilia, which is new this year. The good-sized plugs arrived like this in the post today, with care instructions, and looked reasonably happy (below) after their journey. The growers promise guaranteed. The Beekenkamp begonia collection is available on the internet from www.bloomingrand.com. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Brighton's BAi360 experience - minute by minute. Out of my shed.

Thursday, 31 July 2014. Playtime at Buckingham Palace. With Prince George having just celebrated his first birthday, it’s fitting that this year’s summer exhibition in the State Rooms of Buckingham Palace is all about royal childhood. Of the clothing on display, most was made for special occasions, and carefully looked after. In common with all youngsters, royal children enjoyed dressing up. In one, Prince Philip is joining in his children's fun, pedalling hard on a little tricycle, alongside Princess An...

Monday, 29 September 2014. Strawberry runners - success and failure. Last summer I tried growing strawberries both in a grow-bag and in a traditional pot. Both produced the same number of fruits, but the grow-bag ones were much bigger. This year I’ve been watching for strawberry runners – the long shoots from which sprout baby plants that can be used next year. Again, the grow-bag has won. As you can see above, it’s now surrounded. By more than 20 little strawberry plants, already potted up.

Saturday, 28 June 2014. Yellow Book garden visiting. One of the best things about going to Yellow Book gardens (which open to raise money for charity under the National Gardens Scheme) is the way they are brimming with inspiration. Last weekend I went up to Hertfordshire to see what. Tom Stuart-Smith had created at his family home at Serge Hill, and came away with many photographs and notes of the eye-catching plant combinations – and a euphorbia I had coveted since seeing it at Hidcote. Jim and Elayne&#...

Wednesday, 1 October 2014. East London reborn: the ArcelorMittal Orbit and Queen Elizabeth Park. For a fascinating and very different view of the capital, head east to Stratford and the former Olympic park. In 2012 this was the focus of world attention as athletes competed for medals. Now it’s being transformed into a leisure destination for everyone to enjoy. Easy to reach by public transport, it has enough attractions to fill an action-packed day. At the park's heart is the twist ing. Those wanting to ...

Sunday, 30 March 2014. Inspiration at the Edible Garden Show. There were some interesting exhibits at the 2014 Edible Garden Show, held for the first time at Alexandra Palace in London, but what really caught my eye was the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Food Champions show garden. Monday, 10 March 2014. The Vikings - Life and Legend. And many people, myself included, still carry their DNA. Uncovered in a Danish fjord. United England, Denmark, Norway and parts of Sweden.
