going deutsch >>: November 2007

http://goingdeutsch.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

A little blog about moving to Germany and the adventures that ensue. Thursday, November 15, 2007. Puffy Coat in Full Effect. While I was able to boast about the wonderful long daylight hours during the summer, I can now moan that dusk is around 5pm and it's pitch black by 6. But I guess it's only fair. (And by the way, the fair does. Only come around once a year here in Hamburg. They build it up for our enjoyment. Annually. But I digress.). Tuesday, November 13, 2007. Ni hao. Welcome to Germany. I was at...

A little blog about moving to Germany and the adventures that ensue. Tuesday, July 31, 2007. In the past six months I've made many, many language blunders as I'm getting my German up to speed. Most of the time my mispronunciations or word mix ups still get my point across, but they often also result in a few chuckles. A few recent laughs:. Baeren v. Beeren. I was working at Das Kleine Cafe describing a cake with baiser. Berries), except I pronounced beeren. Drucken vs. druecken. Punzen vs. brunzen:.

A little blog about moving to Germany and the adventures that ensue. Sunday, October 5, 2008. October 3rd was Tag der Deutschen Einheit. But I did make it out to 20up and East on Saturday night with Bettina, who skipped over to Hamburg while here in Germany. Here the spectacular view from - you guessed it - 20 stories up:. As you can see from this interior shot, the windows are monstrous. And this is an interior of the trendy East hotel. It's a little too space agey for my taste, but I still dig it.

A little blog about moving to Germany and the adventures that ensue. Monday, March 3, 2008. All Good Things Must Come to an End. I think this blog will be slowly coming to an end. It's just over a year old now (a ripe, old age, no? Maybe I'll pull a Cher and reappear in a few weeks/months/years. I'll send you all an email if that happens. In the meantime, pray for spring and all it brings. Because this winter is seriously getting old. Oh yeah, and I turned 31. Shit happens. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A little blog about moving to Germany and the adventures that ensue. Sunday, September 30, 2007. Since Germany's men's team didn't win the World Cup soccer title, Germany's. S team did. ;) They beat Brazil 2 to 0 today, defending their title. For all you across the ocean, at least America won third. :). Thursday, September 27, 2007. Yesterday during class we practiced elevator pitches, an exercise in persuasion in which we had to sell our creative idea to a fictitious CEO of an advertising agency. I will...

Kabulog: Too Much To Be Resolved

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2007/01/too-much-to-be-resolved.html

Monday, January 01, 2007. Too Much To Be Resolved. First and foremost: Eid Mubarak, Happy New Year and a belated Merry Xmas. Second, the words of Creeley:. New Year’s Resolution. What one might say. Wanting to do it,. Hoping to solve it,. You break it to bits,. Swallow the pieces,. Finally quit quitting,. Accept it, forget it. But what world is this. Has such parts,. Or makes even thinkable. Paradoxic new starts—. Turn of the year. Weighs in the cold. All that’s proposed. Simply to change it. Again from ...

Kabulog: (Make/A) Sense of Things, Part II

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2007/03/makea-sense-of-things-part-ii.html

Wednesday, March 07, 2007. Make/A) Sense of Things, Part II. So back to the most reliably consistent (speaking of quantity, definitely not quality here, folks) topic of this blog: what I’ve been listening to. Go get some Anousheh Kahlili. So go get her last album. And definitely her new/free stuff. As the new album seems to show progression (though one track has a distinctly Fiona feel to it). So she’ll be another Norah (Anousheh even has recently done a Millenium Stage Show. Make sense of that. Make/A) ...

Kabulog: (Make/A) Sense of Things, Part I

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2007/03/makea-sense-of-things-part-i.html

Wednesday, March 07, 2007. Make/A) Sense of Things, Part I. It’s been all about dispositions and moods and sentiments and atmospheres and getting a feel for things. That applies to more than just the weather, which has been completely up and down and all wonderful, but unsettled and unsettling. But finally the consensus (a really just a dire hope) is that winter has finally broken. And with work, it’s been that way for me to. (How is that for a completely trivializing segue? It is a very new blog I am tr...

Kabulog: September 2006

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 30, 2006. The Martial Arts of Mayhem. It was a day for fights. All blows pummeled through smiles, laughs, smirks and some judo too. Well a lot of judo—others may call it diplomacy. So the vendors/bidders sat there in front of the panel as we opened the bids. It was nearly mayhem, and there was some jostling, and a good amount of contention. But it went, not to well, but it went. At the end of the event, the smiles, laughs and smirks became a bit more sincere, or in the lea...Finally, ...

Kabulog: Going The Distance, Part I

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2007/02/going-distance-part-i.html

Friday, February 23, 2007. Going The Distance, Part I. Since it’s a Friday, and we’re on lockdown again, I figured it’d be a good time to finally get around to an update on the blog. So, basically, this area is confounding and perplexing as it’s always seems to be. Thus, to me, it’s as troublesome as it’s always been too. It seems like it’s all about who has the endurance to go the distance. And at the elevations in this part of the world, endurance is everything. Very informative. thanks for sharing.

Kabulog: The Name of the Game

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2007/01/name-of-game.html

Friday, January 19, 2007. The Name of the Game. Inconsistency, it is. I’ve proven my fealty to that, blog wise at least (blah blah blah…apologize…blah blah blah…empty promise for the opposite…blah blah blah…blah blah blah). I call it adapting, though. The attack, and the Afghans involved in the stopping of it. On a military-centric website, makes no mention of the Afghans that apparently did the brunt of the work in thwarting the attack). On the Applebaum article. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Saturday, March 24, 2007. Will be some updates to flickr on the last of the Kabul photos, and others. Links to this post. Sunday, March 18, 2007. Nearly there. A day and "a wakey," as some (yes, expats, and yes, the military background type) say around here. The other ritual today was a burning. Got to watch a year and a half go up in flames. OK, I'll stop with the melodramatic metaphors. So cleaned up my room/office and got rid of a lot of documents. Links to this post. Wednesday, March 07, 2007. It&#82...

Kabulog: December 2006

http://kabulog.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 22, 2006. First, look to your right. On the webpage. Photos. So I've been back in Kabul for nearly a week now. During that week, just about everyone else has left. The holiday period will be quite a stretch, as Eid holidays coincide with this season. So our national staff get around 6 days off. We get at least 2. But the remaining 4 will be slow, if not the whole stretch from now until a week or two into January. All: Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year. Links to this post.

A little blog about moving to Germany and the adventures that ensue. Thursday, November 6, 2008. For those of you who think that voting is as boring as filling in a bubble, let me introduce you to the ballot used by the non-state of Washington, DC:. That's right, to vote you connect the broken arrow pointing to the candidate of your choice. To use the catchy phrase: select and connect. Now it's no butterfly ballot, but certainly more fun than a scantron. Monday, November 3, 2008. Sunday, October 5, 2008.
