The Bailey Bunch: Biking in Bali
http://thebailey.blogspot.com/2014/02/biking-in-bali.html
Sunday, February 09, 2014. After the river-rafting, we spent one day on the beach, playing in the boisterous waves. As the tide came in. No pictures! And sunburns despite slathering on 100-SPF sunscreen). The next day, another adventure. This time, biking for $40 each including pickup and drop-off at our hotel, breakfast and lunch. First stop: a coffee plantation. Which also grew cocoa beans. (Now those are what I was interested in! I think it is called Luwak or something. I did get some ginger tea.

The Bailey Bunch: April 2013

Wednesday, April 24, 2013. What do you do when it rains on a cruise? Rain It happens a lot in April. Alice spent time finishing a good book. And we hung out a lot on the back side of the boat under the porch, seeing the scenery we'd already passed by, but seeing it without the rain drops in our eyes. And we played some card games or chatted with others in the group. I met one woman who has been cruising since February, starting in New Zealand, going to Australia. And that's besides the 5 crew members.

Monday, September 23, 2013. Eastern Qing Dynasty Tombs. Mid-Autumn Festival: the first full moon of the autumn (according to the Chinese lunar calendar) and a national holiday, this year occurred last Thursday, Sept. 19. So the government decreed an extended holiday- Thursday and Friday off, but Friday is made up on the following Sunday. (Kevin took a vacation day for Sunday). Now the weather is moving into Fall, and much more to my liking! To the last empress in the early 1900's. And a discreet toilet.

The Bailey Bunch: May 2013

Saturday, May 04, 2013. Spring is here, and my sister came to visit! I know many of you in the U.S. are still dealing with snow, but here in China, spring is well under way. Ellie arrived on the 25th, and immediately had to deal with the frustrations of China. The driver thought she was at Terminal 3 when she was at Terminal 2- and she didn't have a phone! Then my sister came to visit. Terry has been teaching English in Guangzhou this winter at a university there. The ornamental trees were in full blossom.

The Bailey Bunch: October 2012

Sunday, October 14, 2012. And we even rode camels in the Gobi. Mosques. Forts. Monasteries. We saw them all! In traveling with a tour group, there are times when you think, "I'm tired! I'm just going to sit on the bus and pass this one by (and maybe read a book)." But then that little voice inside starts saying "but this might be REALLY cool, and you'll miss the only opportunity to see it." So, we saw everything. And were exhausted by the time we returned home at the end of the week. I think a highlight ...

The Bailey Bunch: November 2012
http://thebailey.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 11, 2012. We always knew she had a dramatic flair. For the past 2 months, Alice has been involved in play practice at her school. Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons she stayed after school. We are so fortunate in that there is now a bus (a NEW bus complete with the school logo on it! For the kids with activities. No longer does our driver have to make the extra trips into town to get her (a 2-hour round trip). But, back to Alice. And did a great job! It's always a challenge learning l...

The Bailey Bunch: October 2013

Tuesday, October 15, 2013. Guizhou Province, Part II (and probably the last.). Alice, Rachel and a 15-year-old Miao girl in full costume at Datong. Her grandmother sat watching. This village was the "short skirt" Miao, as opposed to the "long skirt" Miao. It was a cool morning, so the girl had leggings on. Then the grandmother showed us what she does in the village- weaving. She was so fast! Notice the new washing machine, but the window was the. But a rototiller is far better than a foot and a shovel!

The Bailey Bunch: January 2013

Thursday, January 10, 2013. Signs of Christmas in China. Christmas is beginning to be adopted here in China- not the part about celebrating the birth of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, but the part about spending lots of money. There is a big Christmas tree on a city square. Lighted trees in front of stores. And many stores sport cardboard Santa faces in their windows. (And the face is always identical, and in some stores, they stay up for the entire year.). Tuesday, January 08, 2013. Snow is rare enough h...

The Bailey Bunch: A surprising taste of spring...
http://thebailey.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-surprising-taste-of-spring.html
Monday, March 03, 2014. A surprising taste of spring. The past couple of weeks in Tianjin have been rather dreary. Lots of fog. Air quality index numbers in the 200-400 range (for comparison, the World Health Organization recommends daily levels of 20 or less). Still, it's only been 3 weeks since we returned from Bali and I didn't feel the need to go on another long journey. Ever since Alice auditioned and was accepted for the AMIS High School Honor Orchestra,. But here we are: Dusseldorf, Germany. We ar...
