2007: New Zealand | Gone Floatabout
https://gonefloatabout.com/circumnavigation/2007-new-zealand
The Sailors and Boat. 2010: Return to Maine. Exploring the world aboard our wooden sailboat. With its mountains, sailing, diving, and welcoming people, New Zealand was one of our favorite places! Spent the 2007/8 cyclone season in New Zealand (safe below the tropical hurricane belt) while Seth lived aboard and worked and I completed another two semesters at Yale. I was lucky enough to visit, though, and was able to squeeze in a little cruising, a little car-camping, and some work on. When we returned to ...

The Sailors and Boat. 2010: Return to Maine. Exploring the world aboard our wooden sailboat. After a rough passage north from New Zealand in May ’08, the jungles and coral reefs of Fiji and Vanuatu were a wonderful treat! We left the Bay of Islands at sunset on May 13, 2008 with a light southerly on. 8216;s quarter. Wind ‘n’ wing, with albatrosses circling the boat, we glided north. In one bay–a hurricane hole surrounded by immense mangroves–we were welcomed almost as family into a tiny close...No port i...

The Sailors and Boat. 2010: Return to Maine. Exploring the world aboard our wooden sailboat. Writing for sailing magazines means I learn about a lot of cool gear I only wish I could have. Our two AGM maintenance-free batteries allow us to store 460 amp-hours, plenty to power. Securing our new Rolls batteries. Introducing Rolls as a sponsor. Insta...

The Sailors and Boat. 2010: Return to Maine. Exploring the world aboard our wooden sailboat. 2010: Return to Maine. With our last two passages we came full circle to complete our 32,000 mile circumnavigation! Anchored in the home port! Flying flags from (almost) everywhere we’d been🙂. On June 28, 2010. Decked out for the homecoming party! The first passage that truly felt as if we were nearing home was the 1000 or so nautical miles from Barbuda in the Caribbean to Bermuda. As in so many of our ports aro...

The Cynical Sailor & His Salty Sidekick: About Us
http://thecynicalsailor.blogspot.com/p/destinations.html
The Cynical Sailor and His Salty Sidekick. We're purveyors of eccentric travel adventures on water and land. Purveyor. Don't you just love that word? It's kind a posh way of describing a person who sells or deals in particular goods. Not that we're posh in any way, shape or form. Far from it. Just take one look at our normal attire of ripped and stained clothes and you'll agree. But it's a fun word which will earn you 16 points in Scrabble, so we're sticking with it. What was there to be scared of? One o...

Metamorphic tidal rocks looking out at the mooring balls. The visibility at Catalina stayed this quality the entire week. Maybe this can be attributed to the warmer waters this El Nino year? Even here in deeper waters - 200 feet, you can see this great pastel blue color to the ocean. Prickly pear cactus at Two Harbors. If you're t...

Captain Curran's sailing blog. A collection of sailing adventures from Alaska to San Diego. May 28, 2015. For better or worse: Avalon harbor on Catalina Island is about to become 'Whatever, USA'. Jessica and I just arrived in Avalon Harbor on the beautiful Catalina Island. We're lucky enough to come out here on the tail end of Memorial Weekend. This way we get a heavy dose of people watching and then we can lean back in the cockpit and watch as the town empties out. What were all these workers bees doing?

Sailing from LA to Avalon is the best reason to live in Los Angeles.

GONE FLYIN' is a collection of eighty stories about "fun" flyng.
Is a book full of stories with happy endings, written by an old pilot who can find splendor and inspiration amidst a winter storm or a summer sunset. It is not a stiff discourse on how we fly, rather it is a celebration of all the reasons why we fly. What's it really like up there? Much like James Herriot's All Things Bright and Beautiful. Books of the 1980s, Gone Flyin' offers an introspective look at a small corner of the world through a contented pair of eyes. Pilots enjoy this book because it rem...
