Photo post: today's kitchen adventures. Jul 25th, 2007 at 12:46 AM. I splurged on Dan Leader's book Bread Alone. On Friday. And so I baked bread today:. What first caught my eye was the "engagement ring a la dough" effect- gold shining through flour, it's kind of neat). And then fried green tomatoes:. We had this big honkin tomato outside, the size of two fists, and we decided we weren't waiting for it to ripen. so we fried it! Oh well. I also don't have a thermometer to gauge the optimum temperature...

Aug 1st, 2007. 1 We have some tiny zucchini coming on! Of Joe-Pye weed blooming in ditches. Never seen/noticed so much of it at one time before. 3 Dinner tonight: Smashed potatoes and balsamic-glazed carrots. I roasted the potatoes (Rose Finn fingerlings, and Red Norland- pink inside and out! And mashed them with cheddar, parmesan, milk, salt and pepper, and chives. Aug 4th, 2007 at 9:23 PM. I GOT CRANBERRY BEANS! We shelled them on the front porch at dusk. Family wedding this weekend (and, unrelatedly, an old friend is in town as well) so I had neither the time nor energy to drive to Troy. Instead I went to the Schenectady market, which is very close but less well stocked. HOWEVER, the farm on Rosendale Road comes there, and they had cranberry beans! This yielded 3 1/2 cups of beans, which gives me a useful ratio: 1 quart of pods yields a generous cup of beans.

It's a slow learning process, and I've got a lot of skills to pick up. For example, one of my big projects for this summer will be learning how to can tomatoes (local ones, of course) so we can eat them throughout the winter.
