It's Go-Time!: Playtest 4 with a Sweet Combo
http://gotimegames.blogspot.com/2007/12/playtest-4-with-sweet-combo.html
My ramblings about game design. Wednesday, December 5, 2007. Playtest 4 with a Sweet Combo. Hi there, just wanted to describe a very cool moment from printrun #4. My brother Gord was in town, so along with brother Ali and the infamous MN we drafted the set. Anyway, the best part of it for me was a wicked combo Gord put together during our game. I'm not sure if he drafted it intentionally, but it rocked. I learned about it thus:. Turn 3: Gord played Shepherd of Decay. Turn 5: Gord played Skyshield Squadron.
It's Go-Time!: Teaching Magic
http://gotimegames.blogspot.com/2008/03/teaching-magic.html
My ramblings about game design. Monday, March 3, 2008. MaRo posted an article today on bringing new players into Magic. It was a decent article, but there is tons more to say on how to introduce the game. So here are my thoughts on teaching Magic - I’ve taught about 25 people to play and they’ve all stuck with it. Most have gone on to drafting, and some attend pre-releases. Always start with mono-white versus mono-red. Red cards hurt the other player. White cards help you. They usually pick red.). And br...
It's Go-Time!: Context matters
http://gotimegames.blogspot.com/2007/12/context-matters.html
My ramblings about game design. Friday, December 21, 2007. Once again, I'm very impressed with Devin Low (Magic's Lead Developer). He just put up an article. That directly mirrors a constant inner dialogue I have while working on my cards:. If somebody sees this one card but not the rest of the set, they'll think it sucks. And I suppose there's no getting around that. But hopefully they've read Low's article about how you need Context before you can evaluate a card. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
It's Go-Time!: Ultra-atheist game is proof of art
http://gotimegames.blogspot.com/2008/06/ultra-atheist-game-is-proof-of-art.html
My ramblings about game design. Friday, June 6, 2008. Ultra-atheist game is proof of art. Here's a follow-up to my article. Which examined whether games can be art. On the mighty Destructoid attacks an indie game in which the premise is to cut-off all of the strife caused by religious maniacs by travelling back in time to assassinate Mohammed, Abraham, and the authors of the Bible. The editor, Qais, hadn't made much of an impression on me so far (where's muh Summa and Nex! By Dr Ravi Zacharias. This ...
It's Go-Time!: Morning!
http://gotimegames.blogspot.com/2008/01/morning.html
My ramblings about game design. Friday, January 4, 2008. WotC has started previewing cards. From Morningtide, the expansion set for Lorwyn. It looks like Morningtide is going to play very well with my set - some very similar mechanics and themes being explored. THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS FOR ME BECAUSE IT VALIDATES THE WORK I'VE BEEN DOING; THERE IS NO CHANCE. THAT WotC "STOLE" ANY OF THE IDEAS! Of course, my set has no focus on "Tribal", but other than that there are several areas of commonality. Several ef...

Casual CAS: Hello world!
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2007/06/hello-world.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Wednesday, June 27, 2007. Hi there, welcome to my blog about complex adaptive systems and related concepts. I'm no kind of expert about anything - I'm a computer and games nerd. But I've started looking into complex adaptive systems - CAS - since reading John Holland's book Hidden Order. Casual CAS: More candy vs. the greater good: detachment in decision-making
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2013/06/more-candy-vs-greater-good-detachment.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Tuesday, June 18, 2013. More candy vs. the greater good: detachment in decision-making. I recently watched a great documentary called Ape Genius. And then saw this interesting article. Here are some thoughts on the intersection of the two. In Ape Genius, they describe a test which measures impulse control in primates:. Again, A has to choose one of the options; that chosen candy goes to B, and A gets the remainder. Reason-out "if I point to...
Casual CAS: Wealth never survives three generations
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2010/03/wealth-never-survives-three-generations.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Friday, March 26, 2010. Wealth never survives three generations. It's late at night, and I am in a philosophical mood. I shall inflict the result upon you. Chinese proverb: Wealth never survives three generations. And today, the lessons the US "learned" in Vietnam strike me as a form of Wealth. Casual CAS: Nursery words
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2008/08/nursery-words.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Thursday, August 28, 2008. About a study of why "nursery words" exist in so many languages. Nursery words are things like mama (English), papa (Italian), baba (Ukrainian), and titi (Hungarian). The study examined brain scans of babies as they listened to various words: " Brain activity increased in the babies' temporal and left frontal areas whenever the repetitious words [ baba. Were played. Words with non-adjacent repetitions (' ba. The s...
Casual CAS: Wright & Wright on the cooperation arms race
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2008/05/wright-wright-on-cooperation-arms-race.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Monday, May 26, 2008. Wright and Wright on the cooperation arms race. Well this couldn't come at a better time - the great Will Wright says that Cooperation and Competition are a big part of his motivation for working on Spore. Spore is a simulation coming out this fall which looks to re-invent the definition of computer "game" for all of us. Here's Will:. Quotes from this video which are most pertinent to stuff I've talked about before:.
Casual CAS: Zombie Ants from Outer Space
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2007/08/zombie-ants-from-outer-space.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Monday, August 27, 2007. Zombie Ants from Outer Space. I promised myself that I wouldn’t do another post with a biological example of the viral model so soon, but Mike the Boyfriend (my sister’s boyfriend, not mine) just told me about this and it’s too cool to delay. The Fluke’s ultimate target is the belly of a herbivore such as a cow or sheep. This is how it gets there:. An ant comes along and eats the snail-ooze. No, really! While the te...
Casual CAS: Secret adventures
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2009/05/secret-adventures.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Friday, May 1, 2009. Hi there, I just wanted to say thanks to the folks who have posted comments here in the last few months. I'm amazed that anybody out there has stumbled across my blog, and now I feel guilty for not updating in a while (but there is a good reason for it.). I will try to put up the occasional interesting thought in the meantime, I just can't do it as regularly as before. Thanks, seeya soon! The Rise of Cooperation.
Casual CAS: The Viral model giveth, and it taketh away
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2007/08/viral-model-giveth-and-it-taketh-away.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Tuesday, August 7, 2007. The Viral model giveth, and it taketh away. So the last post. Showed one way in which a species improved its odds of success in the world by harnessing the power of the viral model. Here's a look at another organism which uses the model to deadly effect, simultaenously strengthening its species while devastating. The Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog! Doesn't look very threatening, does it? Does that ring any bells? Over ...
Casual CAS: Cross-cultural study of cooperation and freeloaders
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2008/03/cross-cultural-study-of-cooperation-and.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Monday, March 24, 2008. Cross-cultural study of cooperation and freeloaders. Here's a neat study. That investigates how cultural background impacts social behavior. It looks at some of the same themes as my "Rise of Cooperation" toy you can download from the toolbar. In primitive societies, the average person was willing to free-load; if punished, the freeloader would "revenge punish" whoever chose to punish them previously.
Casual CAS: Support for cooperation over competition
http://casualcas.blogspot.com/2008/05/support-for-cooperation-over.html
My totally unqualified ramblings about Complex Adaptive Systems. Monday, May 12, 2008. Support for cooperation over competition. About a recent study that shows individuals prefer cooperation over competition. The scenario is that players are grouped into 2 teams, and then each player has 2 options:. Produce 1 point for each ally and remove a point from the other team. Produce 1 point for each ally without affecting the other team. Players tended to use option #2 instead of hurting the other team.).

It's Go-Time!
My ramblings about game design. Thursday, June 12, 2008. How to make more money with Rock Band. This will be more constructive than me saying “Most of the downloadable content for Rock Band sucks.”. But let me start by saying that most of the downloadable content for Rock Band sucks. However, after stewing about it for a while, I’ve realized the problem (and yes, I’m probably about 6 months behind everyone else…). The solution is to:. The owners must be so concerned that if they release a song-creation t...
