In the spring of 2010 a new figure appeared in Edmond Rinnooy Kan’s paintings. It was a simple, stocky creature, not more than a head on legs. His name was Gou-gou. Since then Gou-gou has been coming back and now has a dominant presence in all Rinnooy Kan’s work. Gou-gou comes in different forms. It can appear as a single person, as a group, as a two legged or four legged creature, male, female or sexless. Sometimes Gou-gou has arms, sometimes not. Yet Gou-gou is unmistakably Gou-gou.

I started my professional life in medicine, graduated from Medical School in 1981. And finished my doctoral thesis in 1986. Then I quit both medicine and science and. Went to Art School in New York City (Parson's School of Design) and Amsterdam (Wackers Academy). Thereafter I worked in Amsterdam as an art-director and designer. Since 2005 I work full time as a fine artist. I live both in the United States (Franklin, NY) and The Netherlands (The Hague) and show my work on both continents.
