Sunday, 18 March 2018. Winter birding in Tenerife. Seems like a long time ago now but at the end of January Polina and I headed off to Tenerife for some winter sun. It wasn't a birding trip but I did have one day to myself to go birding. I really wanted to see Blue Chaffinch so that had to be my number one target in the time I had available. Laurel Pigeon and Bolle's Pigeon would be nice too. Chaffinch (which I had seen in 2015 in Madeira and a very smart bird they are too) and teneriffae. Obviously ther...

Graham Clarke's Blog: A slice of Madeira

http://grahamsphoto.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-slice-of-madeira.html

Tuesday, 2 June 2015. A slice of Madeira. Never was a holiday so badly needed. Leading up to it both Polina and I were so busy and stressed that we almost thought of cancelling at the last minute but in the end we went and are both very glad we did. I was picked up at our hotel by Hugo and Catarina of Madeira Wind Birds. Trocaz Pigeon, Madeira, 23rd May 2015. We stayed around the same area (Sao Vicente.I think? Where we had several Common Terns but no Roseates though. Common Terns, Madeira, 23rd May 2015.

Graham Clarke's Blog: A round-up of the week

http://grahamsphoto.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-round-up-of-week.html

Friday, 12 June 2015. A round-up of the week. House Martins, Marston Marshes, Norwich. I haven't seen any Cuckoos this year but did hear one calling last week and the Barn Owl is there most evenings. Other than that, Reed and Sedge Warblers are all there, Blackcaps, Common Whitethroats too but this year no Garden Warblers. The Grasshopper Warblers seem to have stopped reeling but I did have one in flight carrying a faecal sack, so that bodes well. Hobby, Lakenheath Fen, Suffolk. After my lunch (supplemen...

Graham Clarke's Blog: Return to Narborough

http://grahamsphoto.blogspot.com/2015/06/return-to-narborough.html

Sunday, 14 June 2015. An early exit from work on Friday evening never materialised so I cancelled my plans to go again to Narborough for the Marsh Warbler. Instead I hit the hay early on Friday night and rose at 4.30am on Saturday morning. By 6am I was parking up at Narborough village. I was joined by photographer John Pringle and we both proceeded to the spot along the Nar Valley Way where one other birder was present and the Marsh Warbler was singing and showing well. And of course, an obligatory video!

Graham Clarke's Blog: A quick round-up

http://grahamsphoto.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-quick-round-up.html

Thursday, 30 July 2015. Yet again I've left it for a few weeks without a blog update. This becomes more of a round-up then than anything else. But don't quote me), anyway it was a lifer for me so well worth the trip. On Sunday I had a nice living room tick as I watched a Hobby hunting over the meadows that run along the northern edge of the river Yare as it passes around Whitlingham Broad. A considerable number of Swifts were hunting at the same time so was it possibly predating these? A little bit of 'g...

Graham Clarke's Blog: Ode to a Nightingale

http://grahamsphoto.blogspot.com/2015/05/ode-to-nightingale.html

Saturday, 16 May 2015. Ode to a Nightingale. While I'm fortunate to live in a part of the UK where they still hang on, they're not the easiest bird to see, never-mind to photograph. There are a few local spots where they breed near Norwich but I've never seen them well in any of those, usually just a fleeting glimpse as they break cover and then sing from deep in some impenetrable whitethorn bush. Didnt have to be Norfolk, I would travel if I knew of one that was singing in the open. At the site, the Nig...

nOObirder: Birding in the UAE Part One - man it's hot!

http://noobirder.blogspot.com/2012/10/birding-in-uae-part-one-man-its-hot.html

Birding, photography and random stuff. Saturday, 27 October 2012. Birding in the UAE Part One - man it's hot! It all began on Facebook, chatting with Chris, an old friend from way back in college at the poly in Oxford. A few seconds waiting for the chat box to fill with the reply - "Why don't you come and see us? OK I used poetic license there! It was more like I invited myself with a -. Do you have room for a pale, fat b*st*rd in your pool? I am sure we squeeze and extra one in" came the reply. So the 1...

Drimnagh Birdwatch: 40 WAXWINGS, COOLEY ROAD, DRIMNAGH!

http://drimnaghbirdwatch.blogspot.com/2012/11/40-waxwings-cooley-road-drimnagh.html

Wednesday, November 28, 2012. 40 WAXWINGS, COOLEY ROAD, DRIMNAGH! YES, 40 WAXWINGS ON COOLEY ROAD, DRIMNAGH! Cycling to work this morning (crazy in this morning's frost, but there you go, I cycled carefully Mum) I was pootling along Cooley Road, when I heard a Mistle thrush going completely beserk in a tree to my right. I cycled over into the car park and stopped at the barrier to get a better look - the flock of birds were WAXWINGS! The Scandinavian/ Russian birds had made it to Cooley Road, so cool.

Drimnagh Birdwatch: iwepts October 2012

http://drimnaghbirdwatch.blogspot.com/2012/10/iwepts-october-2012.html

Monday, October 15, 2012. What time did you have your alarm set Saturday morning? 545am for me, crazy time to be getting up, crazy to be. Actually getting up I thought, (as I got up), but a 10.30am high tide meant we had to be at bull island for 7.20am. It was a cold morning. Jumping up and down cold, and it didn't warm up. I could hardly concentrate on my counts, Ger was banging his mitts together so much. Due to our extra early start we were all counted, finished and sat having our coffees by 9.30am.

Drimnagh Birdwatch: gear

http://drimnaghbirdwatch.blogspot.com/p/gear.html

If you're anything like me, you google reviews of most things before you buy them. So if this helps anyone, here's what I've bought and my opinions on how good they are for my birdwatching. The initial prices might seem quite steep, but if you think of the years of use you're going to get from your optics, it's well worth it. Opticron 8×42 Countryman BGA T PC WP. The best cheap water proof binoculars I could find. These binocs are excellent – images are sharp and the light is good. They're also great for...

Drimnagh Birdwatch: Yorkshire Swifts

http://drimnaghbirdwatch.blogspot.com/2012/10/yorkshire-swifts.html

Tuesday, October 2, 2012. I was at my other home over the weekend, Yorkshire home, not Dublin home - and noticed large numbers of Swifts still flying around. I was suprised, here in Dublin they usually leave before the House martins and Swallows, but in Yorkshire they're the last to leave. Other goings on included a Redkite swooping down onto our patio to take some food which had been left out for the farm cats. And a quite unusual leucistic Rook in Morrison's carpark in Harrogate. Tide times - Dublin.

nOObirder: Birding in the UAE Part Two - I think my head has melted

http://noobirder.blogspot.com/2012/11/birding-in-uae-part-two-i-think-my-head.html

Birding, photography and random stuff. Sunday, 18 November 2012. Birding in the UAE Part Two - I think my head has melted. So after chillin' in Chris and Noreen's garden for the first day, getting several hours of very relaxed birding in and still managing 5 life ticks, I decided to head out into the urban environment of Jebel Ali, where I was staying in Dubai, to see what else would be kicking about. Jeez, its not that far! Grey Francolin ( Francolinus pondicerianus) aka the "suicide bird". Apparently i...

Drimnagh Birdwatch: Oh so quiet

http://drimnaghbirdwatch.blogspot.com/2013/01/oh-so-quiet.html

Thursday, January 3, 2013. Lack of zoom lens = lack of blog posts around here eh, and that's how it's going to stay for a while I'm afraid. After Mike Conn gave a full refund on my broken Sigma 150-500 zoom lens, I put the money away safely and started looking for alternative lens options, which for the same price with the same reach, were non existent. And the money from my lens was gone. Without photos, I'd find the blog boring since I've always been more into images than writing. I'm also not going to...

The Photoblog of Graham Welch. Autumn in the Orchard. Thought my latest post would be an Autumnal theme, as my last was a spring gallery. Here are some images of Forty Hall Farm Orchard taken on the last Sunday in October. A misty start, but made the orchard very photographic. Although we had made cider back in early October, the Black Dabinett Cider apples seem to have got left, shame they never got used, but they make a good image. There was some frost, and it shows here in the Red Sentinel Crabapples.
