Grammar/Syntax Errors

Monday, November 19, 2007. A headline from the Indianapolis Star over the weekend: WAREHOUSE BURNS NEAR AIRPORT. How about, "WAREHOUSE NEAR AIRPORT BURNS? They make it sound like someone picked up a warehouse and moved it to a location near the airport, then set it on fire. I know their headline isn't exactly incorrect, but, as James Kilpatrick would say, it could have been stated with greater clarity. Monday, November 5, 2007. As some other group? Clarification required, people! Friday, November 2, 2007.

Grammar/Syntax Errors: NBA in New Orleans

http://grammar-syntax-errors.blogspot.com/2007/11/nba-in-new-orleans_02.html

Friday, November 2, 2007. NBA in New Orleans. Apparently, this year the NBA is going to have a season-long effort to help re-build New Orleans. When teams visit New Orleans for games, they will perform various community service endeavors, from building public basketball courts to bolstering learning resources in the area's schools. This sounds like a great idea to me. Do they hire 3rd graders as writers and editors? I guess it keeps their costs down. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). NBA in New Orleans.

Grammar/Syntax Errors: PURDUE GAME

http://grammar-syntax-errors.blogspot.com/2007/11/purdue-game_05.html

Monday, November 5, 2007. From Sunday's Lafayette Journal/Courier, "For most of the first half, a typically strong group of defenders were not on the same page." A group WERE? But a group is a singular entity. True, it is comprised of more than one, but the word is singular, therefore a group WAS. And furthermore, the group was not on the same page as what? Grammar/Syntax Errors: Tropicana Light & Healthy

http://grammar-syntax-errors.blogspot.com/2007/10/tropicana-light-healthy_17.html

Wednesday, October 17, 2007. Tropicana Light and Healthy. This morning, I noticed something interesting on our half-gallon carton of Tropicana Light and Healthy Orange Juice (the one that's only one Weight Watchers point): 1/2 Less Sugar and Calories. One half less? Doesn't that mean 50% more? It seems to me this could come from a phrase "less by half". But a notice "Less sugar and calories by half" wouldn't make a good slogan so they chose somewhat awkward solution. BTW, a great blog! Is what I always a...

Join the good fight against the forces of evil! Stop saying "like" and "you know," and ask other people to stop, too. With all the progress civilization has made against indoor public smoking, surely there's hope in the fight against linguistic viruses, too? Verbal tics tend to fall into three broad categories, but share a common cause and create a common impression: the speaker lacks confidence. It was sort of an attack on his character (but the attack failed? Third are buzz words and cliches. These...

The Grammar Snob

Wednesday, November 19, 2008. The once and future successor. Anyway, back to grammar. The headline to this story on yesterday's online version of the Austin American-Statesman. Was "Muschamp named Brown's future successor". This begs the question whether there was once a past successor to Brown, which in turn makes one wonder (or makes me wonder, anyway) whether there will be any future predecessors named any time soon. I guess it made some editor at the A A-S. Thursday, October 16, 2008. Before I realiz...
