Grandmother Sinclair's Diary

Wednesday, September 7, 2011. The family moved to a village near Montreal, called Nitro. In many ways it resembled sleepy little Frensham, and the family was happy there, despite the hard life of near poverty. Allan worked at night stoking furnaces, and attended classes at McGill during the day. He graduated with a degree in English Literature about the same time as the Korean Crisis. By then another boy had been added to the brood. Perhaps because of his growing family he rejoined the army. Dad moved to...

Grandmother Sinclair's Diary: February 2011

http://grandmothersinclair.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Wednesday, April 16, 1902. Mrs Stein seemed worried I would not be dressed warmly enough for the trip, and said she would bring some extra shawls and gloves when they came for me – April can still be very cold. The Steins seem to be such kind people! I think I will be very happy in my new situation. Hopefully the time will fly by and I will eventually be reunited with my little daughter, who I miss more than I can tell. Tuesday, April 15, 1902. It is called Mount Royal.

Grandmother Sinclair's Diary: September 2010

http://grandmothersinclair.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 30, 2010. Sunday, May 18, 1899. At the Markam’s things are getting worse for me. Mr. Connor never fails to find a way to put his hands on me, always so no one else can see. I think he knows Mrs. Andrews is on to him. I have a feeling I will be unemployed before long, for I cannot stand much more of him. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Sunday, May 21, 1899. I know Mrs. Andrews saw what happened, for she patted me on the back later on, as I was taking my leave for the evening. I hear Mr&...

Grandmother Sinclair's Diary: December 2010

http://grandmothersinclair.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 27, 2010. Sunday, September 22, 1901. I still have the precious money Mr. Markam used to slip me from time to time, as well as the five pound note Angus gave me when last we were together – “Just in case you need it for an emergency,” he told me, almost as if he knew I would need to be taking care of myself. Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Sunday, August 25, 1901. On Friday I was able to finally able to get the news I needed to get away. I found they are looking for domestic servants just ...

Grandmother Sinclair's Diary: July 2011

http://grandmothersinclair.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 31, 2011. The War-Weary Years, con't. Friday, July 29, 2011. By 1941 Eileen was expecting her first baby, and in Frensham we had first-row seating to watch the results of the bombings of London lighting the night sky. We were near enough London to see the fires, but we hoped far enough away to avoid being a target of the Luftwaffe. Friday, July 22, 2011. It seemed natural our young women would be attracted to these soldiers from so far away, and my Eileen was no exception. She had been worki...

Grandmother Sinclair's Diary: May 2011

http://grandmothersinclair.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 15, 2011. Our trip to England was aboard the Duchess of Richmond, one of the seven troop-carrying vessels that safely crossed the ocean in advance of the brutal Battle of the Atlantic. Many members of the Royal Montreal Regiment lost their kipper breakfast the first day at sea! From Grennock, Scotland, we traveled by train to Aldershot in. The south of England, were we were marched to Albuhera Barracks, where we shared our first English breakfast. There were no pillows or sheets. The winter o...
