My Writing Life: Photographs - Taking or Making History?
http://writersshop.blogspot.com/2009/06/photographs-making-history.html
Sunday, 7 June 2009. Photographs - Taking or Making History? On the odd occasion in the past when I have taken a 'difficult' photograph [not necessarily subsequently published], I did it for a particular reason. In the main, I don't feel a particular photograph should not. Be taken, although I do have some views on ethics! Take my camera and photograph me . . ! Now, why did she do this? I can only surmise that she felt she was making history and wanted that history preserved. Remarkable! A liaison office...

Cemeteries I Have Visited. Adventures in Cemetery Hopping. Separating the Sheep From the Goats: Something to Chew on at Decatur Cemetery. Asymp; 4 Comments. First, I’d like to apologize for being absent from the blog for over a month. Due to a move into a new home across town, I had to put my cemetery hopping and blog writing activities on hold for a while. I’m still unpacking boxes but for the most part, we’re settled in. But it wasn’t until recently that I actually saw sheep on the premises. Before you...

Cemeteries I Have Visited. Adventures in Cemetery Hopping. Memorial Day 2015: Revisiting the Life of Lance Corporal Jerry Davis. Asymp; 5 Comments. Those of you who’ve followed my blog for a while may remember one of my first blog posts about a young soldier who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. In honor of Memorial Day, I want to revisit that post and add some things I have since learned about Jerry Davis since I wrote it. Stephen Smith, a Tucker resident who served for two years in Vietnam a...

Cemeteries I Have Visited. Adventures in Cemetery Hopping. A Place of Rest for All: Exploring Bohemian National Cemetery. Asymp; 2 Comments. Come to me, all. Who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 8212; Matthew 11:28. They say death is the great equalizer. But in the cemetery, that hasn’t been the case in centuries past. Well, their final home was often a nameless patch of earth. BNC was created as a result of a desire to break down the barriers of class and religion. In 1877, a Cat...

Only the River Remains: Remembering the S.S. Eastland | Adventures in Cemetery Hopping

Cemeteries I Have Visited. Adventures in Cemetery Hopping. Only the River Remains: Remembering the S.S. Eastland. Asymp; 1 Comment. 8220;People were struggling in the water, clustered so thickly that they literally covered the surface of the river. A few were swimming; the rest were floundering about, some clinging to a little raft…others clutching at anything they could reach at bits of wood, at each other, grabbing each other, pulling each other down, and screaming! 8212; Eastland: A New Musical. The E...

Musings of a Curious Individual: December 2014
http://gravehunter-drw.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Musings of a Curious Individual. War Memorials in South Africa. Cemeteries in this Blog. Wednesday, 31 December 2014. It is now 21H42, and in South Africa it is 23H42, almost 2015. I have had an interesting, if somewhat odd year, and up to a point it was going reasonably well. However that has since changed. The year saw many highlights and lowlights too, these are a few of them. I started my year with a bit of shipwatching, the Maiden arrival of Norwegian Getaway in Southampton. But what a lot of hoops ...

Musings of a Curious Individual: Bridges not too far.

Musings of a Curious Individual. War Memorials in South Africa. Cemeteries in this Blog. Sunday, 2 August 2015. Bridges not too far. When I did my original trip to Bristol in January 2014. I decided that on my next trip (whenever that was) would take in the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Assuming I could find it and get to it from where I was on that particular day. However, my plans did not happen and I have still not gotten back to Bristol. And now for the weather: as you can see above it was cloudy and gl...

Musings of a Curious Individual: September 2014
http://gravehunter-drw.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Musings of a Curious Individual. War Memorials in South Africa. Cemeteries in this Blog. Sunday, 28 September 2014. In July this year I headed off to Gosport and Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery. Towering above the dockyard was the ship I wanted to photograph, and on that short ferry crossing I got my pics. Satisfied, I headed off to the cemetery which isn't all that far away, but that ship kept nagging away in the back of my head. I really needed to see her from the dockyard. Haslar really has two major grou...

Musings of a Curious Individual: February 2015

Musings of a Curious Individual. War Memorials in South Africa. Cemeteries in this Blog. Friday, 27 February 2015. Messing around in Bramley looking for graves. I started my excursion from Bramley Station, which is the first station on the local line between Basingstoke and Reading. The train that arrived was not the usual one that I had been catching lately, instead it was a different DMU, and I must admit it was also a noisy bugger. Navigating through the country lanes is always risky and at one point ...
