Laurel Hill - Main

http://www.graveyardsofomaha.com/laurel_hill/laurel_main.html

Laurel Hill Cemetery, located at 21st and Polk Street in Omaha, is squarely in the old South Omaha city limits. It's also known as Sautter's Cemetery and the Old German Cemetery. I'm currently documenting Laurel Hill, and am working on plot maps to help people find their family's plots. To see the progress. If you have Microsoft Excel, click here. Burials listed, with their block, lot and grave number. There are a large amount of unknown burials here, I suspect, given that the records were destroyed ...

Lincoln Memorial Park is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, at 6700 South 14 Street. Teena Brandon is interred at this cemetery, though I don't have a picture of the grave on this site.

Golden Hill Cemetery - Main

http://www.graveyardsofomaha.com/golden_hill/golden_hill.html

Golden Hill Jewish Cemetery is located at 5109 North 42nd Street, and according to the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society the land was purchased by Chevra B'nai Israel Adas Russia in 1888. This makes it a much older cemetery than I had originally thought, and one of the oldest in town. Based on the aerial picture above, Golden Hill has virtually no space left and has been closed to new burials for a long time. As with other Jewish cemeteries here in town, the records for Golden Hill are at the associ...

Fairview Cemetery - Main

http://www.graveyardsofomaha.com/fairview/fairview_1.htm

Fairview Cemetery is situated in the heart of old town Council Bluffs, Iowa, which in the early days was named Kanesville. When Morman settlers first stopped in Kanesville, the hill the cemetery is situated on served as their campground. Many of their dead are buried here, and as the plaque at the cemetery claims (last photo on this page), Pottawatamie Indians and other settlers may also be buried here.

Temple Israel Cemetery - Main

http://www.graveyardsofomaha.com/jewish_pleasant_hill/jewish_pleasanthill_main.html

Temple Israel Cemetery is located at 42 and Redick Street in Omaha; it was known as Pleasant Hill Jewish Cemetery in the old days. It comprises these three cemeteries: Temple Israel, B'Nai Jacob and B'Nai Sholem. The cemetery was refurbished around 1999 and they built a brand new front gate, along with renaming it; it looks updated and beautiful now. The cemetery meanders all over a very steep hillside and is visually striking.

North Omaha History: A History of Omaha's N. 16th Street aka Sherman Avenue

http://northomaha.blogspot.com/2012/11/when-north-16th-street-was-awesome.html

November 30, 2012. A History of Omaha's N. 16th Street aka Sherman Avenue. Long before becoming a decrepit pipeline for the neglect of old North Omaha, North 16th Street had a history almost as long as the city itself. Beginning as a row of rural estates for the city's leaders, it evolved into an important residential, commercial, and industrial byway that the city depended on. Before anyone developed N. 16th, it was the country road that led to the old town of Saratoga. In 1879, the City of Omaha change...

February 14, 2014. A History of the 1913 Easter Tornado. The following video is a collection of pictures from the 1913 Easter Sunday tornado. This was a massive F5 tornado that ripped across the entire city. However, the vast majority of damage was done to North Omaha, and in particular the Near North Side. Most of the photos in the video are from the neighborhood, too. In one block called Idlewild, more than 25 people died. Idlewild was a recreation hall for the African American community. Cemeteries I Have Visited. Adventures in Cemetery Hopping. Gateway to the West: Visiting St. Joseph, Missouri’s Mount Mora Cemetery, Part IV. Asymp; 5 Comments. It hardly seems possible that I’m writing a fourth installment about Mount Mora Cemetery. But when you’re faced with such a rich history of place and people, you don’t want to leave much out! Especially when it involves infamous bank robber Jesse James. But let’s start with the much more respectable Motter family. Unlike many of the others on Mau...

graveyards of Scotland | untold stories in stone

Untold stories in stone. January 4, 2017. Towards the North East of Portree, on the slope of a cliff where sheep graze, stands a lonely gravestone, a small white spot in the greenish brown of Scottish winter. The writing on the stone has deteriorated over the years but records confirm it marks the grave of Richard Williams. The year of his death is marked as 1861. Why was he buried here in that lonely grave? His is the last of the headstones remaining of a graveyard has not been used for a long time.
