Just a girl with a hammer: August 2014
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
My Mighty Life List. Friday, August 15, 2014. Garden bloggers' bloom day, August 2014. I have friends, friends who don't garden, who ask me, "What's new? What have you been up to? The kids from three doors down wander by and I mutter, "Look at how the bumbles keep to the agastache while the honeybees feed on the sedum. And I don't even know what these tiny guys are on the tithonia." They no longer like talking to me because they are teenagers now and also, I'm rambling about bees. Two years ago and it pr...
Just a girl with a hammer: Why I love Yard Rents and craigslist
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2012/04/why-i-love-yardrents-and-craigslist.html
My Mighty Life List. Monday, April 9, 2012. Why I love Yard Rents and craigslist. It was sunny this weekend! I'm so full of love and Vitamin D right now. I had been holding off on reserving a sod cutter for the weekend to see if the weather was actually going to be dry, so I got the 2-4pm delivery spot from Yard Rents. So with just 45 minutes (and a sprinkling of mulch) we went from this:. And I got two responses. By the next afternoon all of these were gone. We went to brunch and came back to an...I bor...

My Mighty Life List. Friday, May 15, 2015. Garden bloggers' bloom day May 2015. Good lord, this is a bloomy month. Everything is blooming right on schedule, so I'll just show new plants or ones that I missed last year (or we'd be here all day). Akebia longerracemosa 'Victor's Secret'. Papaver orientale 'Royal Wedding'. Camassia leichtlinii semiplena, Allium christophii, and Verbascum bombyciferum 'Arctic Summer'. Iris x pacifica ' Alison. Glows from across the yard. Verbascum bombyciferum 'Arctic Summer'.
Blog-on Rainy Side Gardener: Mum-vember at Lan Su Chinese Garden
http://www.rainysidegardeners.com/2014/11/mum-vember-at-lan-su-chinese-garden.html
We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Friday, November 7, 2014. Mum-vember at Lan Su Chinese Garden. If you are looking for something "garden worthy" to do in Portland this weekend, come enjoy the fall color and the lovely chrysanthemums at Lan Su Chinese Garden. Even though I love coming to the garden for the Mum display, my favorite activity is to just walk the paths, check out the plants up close and enjoy the intense oranges, yellows and reds of the changing leaves....
Blog-on Rainy Side Gardener: Strategies for Working in the Garden during the hot, dog days of Late Summer
http://www.rainysidegardeners.com/2014/09/strategies-for-working-in-garden-during.html
We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Monday, September 15, 2014. Strategies for Working in the Garden during the hot, dog days of Late Summer. Siting on this bench, enjoying my morning coffee on a lazy Sunday morning, I contemplated which garden activities to tackle first. I can feel the warm summer breezes and tickling foliage of a nearby bamboo ( Fargesia Robusta. I could sit here with a good book, listening to the Aspen, Populus tremuloides. With the sprinkler on in th...
Blog-on Rainy Side Gardener: January 2015
http://www.rainysidegardeners.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Thursday, January 29, 2015. I am not ready for spring yet! It’s raining again. The Pacific Northwest is. Famous for gray skies and drizzly rain. Although we could really use a big winter storm that would dump lots of snow in the mountains, I am grateful for this past weekend. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the temperature was a balmy 50 degrees fahrenheit. Some of the shrubs are starting to bud up. What’s going on? Are you r...
Just a girl with a hammer: December 2014
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
My Mighty Life List. Monday, December 15, 2014. Garden bloggers' bloom day, December 2014. I had blooms to show you in November, like this beautiful Crocus speciosus. Or my Salvia 'Amistad'. That was improbably pushing out blooms, despite a freeze. Or my Helenium 'Mardis Gras'. But I couldn't pull my shit together last month (a recurring problem) and now those things have finally succumbed to weather. I'm left with Mahonia x media 'Arthur Menzies'. Indoors I have a few blooms to cheer me up.
Just a girl with a hammer: February 2015
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
My Mighty Life List. Friday, February 27, 2015. There's no fun to be had in the basement. A few weekends back the weather was terrible and I suggested to Greg that we watch House of Cards all weekend on the couch and he was like, "Yeah! Let's do that.". Greg almost always spends his weekends working. I tend to spend it puttering in the garden. Our only daytime interaction tends to be me knocking on the office window, and screaming, "You should come outsiiiiiide! It's so pretty out! And Greg stared at me ...
Just a girl with a hammer: April 2014
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
My Mighty Life List. Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Garden bloggers' bloom day April 2014. Note to self: everything that was blooming last year at this time. With our crazy winter, my garden's timing is a little off from last year. My camassia and lewisia were a tiny bit later than last year to bloom. Camassia leichtlinii 'Blue Danube'. Is blooming earlier than it did last year. I have some new introductions, like this Pacific Coast iris. Iris x pacifica 'The Eyes Have It'. Geranium phaeum 'Darkest of All'.
Just a girl with a hammer: Hardscaping is hard.
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2015/04/hardscaping-is-hard.html
My Mighty Life List. Monday, April 13, 2015. We haven't been very good lately at taking it easy on the weekends. Last weekend they were calling for rain but then on the Thursday before the forecast changed to sun and I was like, "I guess there's no reason not to tear out the lawn in the backyard.". This was back breaking and it sucked so hard that I'm glad we may never have to remove sod at this house again. This was before, with our weird boards showing where a low deck will go. I need to redo the right...
