St Louis River Estuary: The stories and the science. Superior beaches and forested trails. Sheltering the estuary from cold, deep Lake Superior, Minnesota Point (aka Park Point) and Wisconsin Point are considered, together, the longest freshwater sand bar in the world. This beautiful, popular beach stretches nearly 10 miles across the mouth of the St. Louis River. The bay side is used quite a bit by boaters, while swimmers utilize the sand beaches on the lake side.
