Biggles Learns to Fly by W.E Johns →. Reading, Biggles and a return. January 13, 2015. Sorry it’s been so long! I have now got passed the first section of my MA and am now onto dissertation preparation. I’m hoping to write my dissertation on the First World War, possibly on representations of trauma in the literature of the war, so I thought it was high time to resurrect the blog. Biggles review coming soon (I promise! This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Biggles Learns to Fly by W.E Johns →.

Newer posts →. Stay Where You Are and Then Leave. January 23, 2014. The first book that I’ve finished of the 100 is Stay Where You Are and Then Leave by John Boyne. Alfie’s father sends many letters over the course of several years and soon it seems to Alfie that the letters have stopped. Several coincidences occur that lead Alfie to believe that something has happened to his father. I thought some of the story erred slightly towards the stereotypical but of course this could be down to the fact that fir...

Reading, Biggles and a return →. August 7, 2014. So one of the books I have conquered recently was The Lie by Helen Dunmore. Cornwall, 1920, early spring. A young man stands on a headland, looking out to sea. He is back from the war, homeless and without family. Behind him lie the mud, barbed-wire entanglements and terror of the trenches. Behind him is also the most intense relationship of his life. Daniel has survived, but the horror and passion of the past seem more real than the quiet fields around him.

Great War Centenary 2014-2018 website by Paul Reed. Book Review: Black Tommies. The story of Black Afro-Caribbean soldiers in the Great War is an often neglected aspect of the conflict: many people know about Walter Tull the professional footballer who became an officer in 1917, but Tull was one of thousands of Black men who served in Khaki. A new book by Ray Costillo helps bridge this gap in our knowledge:. Black Tommies: British Soldiers of African Descent in the First World War. The Battle of Arras is...
