Aelfric of Eynsham – His Life of 1000 Years Ago. A thousand years ago, an English monk wrote the first detailed account we have of working people and their lives – Aelfric’s “Colloquy”. It’s a spyhole into the remote past, opening onto a world of illuminating detail. My talk tries to match it with images of the England it describes. A Guide to Subjects. Medieval Buildings: Art and Architecture. Medieval Scotland, Wales and Borders. Cotswolds, Severn and Upper Thames. A Selection of Musical Talks.

Medieval Women – A Pictorial Journey into their lives. Women’s rights were not at their brightest during the Middle Ages – that well known assertion is true enough in a broad sense. But, what about Mary, the greatest of the saints? And what about all those wealthy business widows, princesses and abbesses? Medieval art has much to tell us about women’s lives (albeit that most of the artists were men! And my lecture uses it to gain a broad overview of a vast subject. A Guide to Subjects.

Matthew Paris of St. Albans – Chronicler and Artist. Matthew Paris was the most opinionated, volatile and talented man in 13th century England! From his headquarters at St. Albans Abbey, his researches spread far and wide, resulting in a magnificent, gossipy chronicle, some inspired mapmaking and above all, wonderful drawings and paintings – vivid, imaginative, both of their time and ahead of their time. Empress Matilda – Her Fight for the Throne. In 1141, England nearly had a reigning queen. The banquet was on the table, but the coronation never took place! Matilda was the woman in question, already Dowager Empress of Germany, and a capable, strong ruler – so why did she fail? My talk explores the politics of gender, medieval theories of monarchy, and the terrible war, which was waged for Matilda’s rights. A Guide to Subjects. Medieval Buildings: Art and Architecture. Medieval Scotland, Wales and Borders.

King Alfred – The Fact and the Fantasy. The man who burned the cakes is much more than that: he’s a solid and inspiring presence in English history. This talk tries to hone in on the elusive facts and illustrate the haunting landscapes, while not forgetting all the statues, follies and monuments created in Alfred’s honour by later generations eager to recreate him in their own image.
