History

History of the Greenbrier Valley. Permanent European settlers began to move into the area that was to become Greenbrier County in 1769-1770. Earlier European settlements - including Boughman’s Fort in 1753), Muddy Creek in 1763, and Clendenen in 1763 - were destroyed by Native American warriors protecting their hunting grounds. Education has been a major influence on the development of Greenbrier County with private schools at various locations in the county dating from its establishment. A private s...

Located only yards from the General Lewis Spring, the Barracks served as a stopping point for early settlers, freight wagons, military units, and stage coaches. THE NORTH HOUSE MUSEUM. Where History Comes Alive. Free guided tours of the museum are offered Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm to individuals and groups of 10 or less.
