It’s a maritime superstition that if you see an albatross whilst at sea, it carries the soul of a dead sailor. The strong family connection and heritage of the sea is evident when he talks about his father. Glen was at sea when his father was very ill. Chipping rust on deck one day, Glen saw a huge albatross flying alongside the ship it came right up close to the ship before soaring away. Minutes later, Glen was called up for a phone call. He knew instantly that his father had died.

Ching Shih (1775 1844) 郑氏. Ching Shih was a prominent pirate during the Qing Dynasty, early 19th century. It is estimated that in the height of her power she had command over 1800 junks manned by over 70,000 pirates made up of men, women and even children. Born in Guangdong in 1775, she was a Cantonese prostitute who came to marry well known pirate Zhèng Yi, she helped him build up his fleet and together they grew the fleet from 200 ships to eventually over 1800. By age 8 her father built a boat from scratch, packed up the family and they set off on an adventure around the world. Their journey lasted for 11 years. Stopping for bouts of schooling (and work when required), Rachel had countless adventures and saw many amazing things around the world. One of the most fascinating events Digby witnessed at sea was hundreds of mutton birds (short tailed shearwaters) swimming underwater on a calm day in Bass Strait as the ship he was on steamed through a huge flock on the surface.
