Monday, December 22, 2014. Hex Dump for Linux. Long ago on an Operating System called CDOS from a company called Cromemco there was a tool I liked called "Hex Dump". It showed the contents of a file as a series of bytes and showed the equivalent ASCII characters (where applicable). It was good for looking at binary files to see what was in them and how they were structured. If you could read machine code you could even spot system calls and get a pretty good idea of what programs were doing and how.
