Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! April 29, 2009. I have made it to Cameroon! And I am about ready to break into a musical number. The airport is decorated with bamboo and masks! The traffic does not try to kill you! They help you do things like find SIM cards and banks! There are 2 boulangeries/patisseries within a 5 minute walk of my hotel! The hotel with water, electricity, towels, and a shower curtain! At 1/2 the price of anywhere in Nigeria! I can use ATMs! Posted by Emily at 7:45 PM.

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! May 26, 2006. The visa is here! Well, ok, the USPS slip saying a delivery from the Syrian Embassy was attempted is here. But I think this is enough cause for celebration. The trip is a go! Posted by Emily at 6:33 AM. May 24, 2006. Squirrels and squeeze plays. In typical Sox fashion, a slow first half, with the highlight being a second inning "squirrel delay.". Fully earned his keep later, though, with a spectacular bunt in the 10th to bring in the winning run...

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! July 30, 2006. Wanders through the Souq Hammidiyyeh are always interesting. Shops, historical sites, and tourist throngs. No, not backpackers. Here, most of the camera-toters are wealthy Gulfi-ies or Iranians, often with South East Asian domestic servants in tow. Some South Asians, Ethiopians, and Europeans. And, lately, a bunch of Lebanese. It's the most diverse group of tourists I've ever seen. Until Condi's trip to Beirut. Marc Lynch. In addition to showin...

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! June 23, 2007. Homework, homework, and. Some of you may be wondering why my usually prolific blogging has been reduced to next to nothing. Here is the answer:. I have no time for anything but homework. Wake up between 7 and 8 am (depending on how much homework was left undone the night before). Walk to campus for breakfast. The good news is that I placed into the highest class! Posted by Emily at 10:11 PM. June 17, 2007. 3 planes and a bus later, I've arrived...

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! July 18, 2007. There is a contest underway amongst the language school students to see who can come up with the best cat picture during our time in Morocco (cats are think on the ground around here, though mostly thin about the belly). I think my previous photo from Chefchaoun is in the running, but here's my favority entry, taken in the cemetary of the Anglican church in Tangier:. She's also enjoying having the shoe on the other foot. Instead of being th...

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! May 18, 2009. On hierarchy and yelling. It’s an international visa. Expecting that indifference, people from the middle class approach them rudely and aggressively. But I don’t get better service! I’ve resisted the urge, so far, clinging to my sense of moral righteousness: darnit, you should treat all people the same, regardless of class! Posted by Emily at 4:57 PM. May 17, 2009. Some photos from the trip between Douala and Yaounde:. Posted by Emily at 4:31 PM.

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! April 26, 2007. As some of you know, this summer's trip is actually a return to Morocco. My first arabic class was at the American Language Institute in Fes ( ALIF. In Spring of 2002. I spent 6 weeks living in a the Institute's ville nouvelle residence with a motly crew of foreigners: you know, the types who wanted to travel to the Arab world six months after 9/11. We BBQed a lot (stingray, anyone? So, I turned to the interweb. Tangier doesn't have the mo...

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! August 31, 2006. People are so tall! And everything is so very, very, very expensive. Between the prices, the weather, and the assault on the senses that is the sheer diversity of people in this city (although 90% of them do seem to have just stepped out of an Urban Outfitters catalogue) I'm in pretty extreme stages of culture shock. While, at the same time, enjoying the familiarity of a place I called home for a year. Posted by Emily at 12:21 AM. I don't hav...

Now with Louis, International Man of Leisure! September 27, 2007. I know it's cliche to say that time goes by faster as you get older, but, seriously, where did the summer go? But, to catch people up on the post-Morocco summer. First, road trip! We spent the last night in Elko, NV, where we had an enormous dinner at a Basque restaurant after being accosted by local Obama 2008 volunteers who were trying to convince us to stick around for the town hall he'd be attending the next day. A POST ABOUT FOOD.
