Sunday, January 30, 2011. In an author's note in that book, she explains:. In setting out to tell Pearl Buck's story I faced a number of challenges. I wanted to convey the full sweep of Pearl's life, but I wanted to see her as my fellow Chinese saw her.". She accomplishes this by telling "Pearl's story through her relationship with her actual Chinese friends.". As I read, I began to wonder how and when Anchee Min learned about Pearl Buck? Had she encountered her work in China? Friday, December 31, 2010.

Bookwagon: April 2010

http://www.gregsbookwagon.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 29, 2010. Dinnie, an overweight enemy of humanity, was the worst violinist in New York, but was practicing gamely when two cute little fairies stumbled through his fourth- floor window and vomited on the carpet. Sorry," said one. Don't worry," said the other. "Fairy vomit is no doubt sweet-smelling to humans.". From The Good Fairies of New York. Thistle fairies from rival clans who have become bickering friends, have fled Scotland to escape a band of fairies from the MacLeod. They experie...

Saturday, June 19, 2010. A garden is a very funny thing. Sometimes you want to dig it up and then other times you do not want to dig it up. Some things you want to make grow in it and other things you want to stop from growing in it. And then the plants that are "for eating" are the ones you are not allowed to eat. I am ve...

Bookwagon: The Help

Sunday, July 11, 2010. The writer of two interesting blogs,. And Journey into Diversity. Provided the initial impetus for the creation of Bookwagon. Here she reviews a book I received from my sister-in-law Annie for my birthday. She didn't put the book down (and I didn't see her face) for two days. Is a first novel for Kathryn Stockett. The story explores how people gain and control power using communication, emotional connection, and vantage point as tools. There is sadness in the pressure to confor...

Bookwagon: January 2010

http://www.gregsbookwagon.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 22, 2010. Sometimes when I find myself preoccupied with minor worries or anxieties, I find distraction and relief in reading about larger, dramatic problems of historic magnitude, and how people organized and worked together to achieve important goals. I spent the end of 2009 engrossed in Ge. By Richard Bessel, a thorough history of both the last six months of the war in Europe and the first six months of occupation and recovery. Would factories begin production of needed goods? Should I ...

No suicides permitted here, and no smoking in the parlor. A pile of stones. August 14, 2015. Rooby is home sick for the second day in a row. She and I both caught some stomach bug, possibly from chicken of dubious quality from not-our-regular vendor at the market. She seems to be about 24 hours behind me symptom-wise, and woke this morning hungry but exhausted. When I left for work, she’d fallen asleep on the couch watching The Wizard of Oz, hugging her stuffed dogs Toto and Snowden. This is my life.

Ruby's first piano. - The Procrastination Salon

http://zugenia.livejournal.com/257429.html

No suicides permitted here, and no smoking in the parlor. Oct 27th, 2012 at 12:37 PM. D bought Ruby a little red piano. Shes been channeling her inner Liszt. The piano makes me feel better about letting her hair do its Romantic genius thing. One of her daycare teachers is some kind of baby hairdo wizard so she always comes home with it under control. But sometimes we gotta roll our sleeves up, let our hair out, and see where the evening takes us. 2 comments Leave a comment. Oct 27th, 2012 05:54 pm (UTC).

Escapism of the bookish sort. Saturday, August 15, 2015. This has been a busy week, with lots going on, but I did get some reading in and had a good week on the blog. I reviewed a fun cozy - my thoughts here. I also I've been watching a bit of Netflix too. I'm still watching The 100 and Arrow and enjoying both. I also posted my first installment of my A Dance with Dragons. And I also had Bookcover Spotlight. I'm kinda fond of this one. This week I read The Blue. Here are the week's northern Michigan pics.
