Greg's Hut Association is an organisation which, in collaboration with the Mountain Bothies Association, helps to maintain Greg's Hut on Cross Fell as a valuable - and on occasion, life-saving - shelter for the many users of the fells and the Pennine Way. It is the highest bothy in England and, arguably, in the British Isles, sitting on the 700metre contour line. There are members living locally to the Hut as well, of course. John Gregory was an active member of the Birmingham Athletics Institute Climbing Club and Ski Club - founded by people who had attended a Climbing course at the Birmingham Athletic Institute during the late 1950s. The club eventually became The Mercian Climbing Club. For more information see this link : - http:/ www.mercianmc.org.uk/welcome/history/. In 1968 John was with a group of Mercian CC members climbing in the Alps. He fell, and lost his life in a tragic accident.

Maintenance over the years 2007 -. History of Greg's hut. The original building was erected as a blacksmith’s shop and to house miners working at the nearby (50 metres away) Katelock lead mine. They lived in here during the week, walking home each week-end. A number of lead mines were worked here on the slopes of Cross Fell in the 19th Century, producing over 13,000 tons of ore between 1811 and 1911, and the ruins are of great interest to industrial archaeologists and historians.
