パグでもっともなじみのある色といえば、 ベージュのような淡いココア色で口のまわりや耳は黒い フォーン です。 最近では、全身が真っ黒になっている ブラック も有名で 一般的な認知度となっています。 パグは、2,400年ほど前に極東にいた マスティフ という犬種を 小型化したものが起源であるとされています。 パグの祖先となる犬種は、16世紀にオランダの 東インド会社 を介して広まったとされ、 1572年にはスペインの兵士がウイリアム王子を殺害しようとした際に 吠えて危機を救ったことから王室でかわいがられていたといいます。 例えばオランダでは、鼻が鳴ることから おどけた犬 という意味で モプスホンド という名前がつけられています。 ドイツでは しかめっ面 を表す モプス という名前で呼ばれていました。 イギリスでは ダッチ パグ 、 チャイニーズ パグ と呼ばれたりしています。 パグの頭の形がにぎりこぶしのように見えるため、 ラテン語で にぎりこぶし を意味する パグナス という言葉に 由来するという説もあります。
