soli deo gloria: December 2014
http://revelation4-11.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Thoughts on theology, science, and culture. Tuesday, December 30, 2014. The complexities of the trial of Galileo. A popular narrative about Galileo and the Catholic church is it was a simply case of science versus religion, freedom of thought versus censorship and persecution, truth versus superstition, reason and evidence versus blind faith, . However, the reality is much more complex. This is nicely described by Lawrence Principe in his lecture course on Science and Religion. A few random points. Galil...

Quantumleap42: An explanation of the problem with "The Kolob Theorem"
http://quantumleap42.blogspot.com/2010/11/problem-with-kolob-theorem.html
A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Monday, November 22, 2010. An explanation of the problem with "The Kolob Theorem". I have significantly rewritten my critique of The Kolob Theorem. My first review of the book was perhaps a little too harsh and short on details. Hopefully my second post will be better at informing anyone who reads this of the fundamental problems with The Kolob Theorem. In a new post " Revisiting the Kolob Theorem. Which has prompt...
Quantumleap42: Book Review: Hamlet's Mill
http://quantumleap42.blogspot.com/2009/07/book-review-hamlets-mill.html
A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Sunday, July 12, 2009. Book Review: Hamlet's Mill. The book I am reviewing is entitled Hamlet's Mill: An essay on myth and the frame of time. By Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend. I am using the 1969 edition published by Gambit Inc. With quick access to a reliable encyclopedia to get the general background the authors just assume you know. There are essentially two separate theses in Hamlet's Mill. Inter...

A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Saturday, June 27, 2015. The Work of God and Man. The difference between the work of God and the work of man is. The work of God does not end with death. Interesting observation. Compare Moses 1:39, Gods work with D&C 11:20, Mans work. Mans work will have an effect on life in the eternities. June 28, 2015 at 6:29 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Help Me With A Project. View my complete profile. Inasmuch as y...
Quantumleap42: Should there be no trees on temple grounds?
http://quantumleap42.blogspot.com/2015/05/should-there-be-no-trees-on-temple.html
A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Sunday, May 17, 2015. Should there be no trees on temple grounds? Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the Lord thy God". The problem is there is one word in that verse which the KJV renders as "grove" but in reality is much more complex. Let us use another translation to illuminate the true meaning of that verse. The New International Version. For example the phrase "his hand is st...
Quantumleap42: When a year is not a year: Calendars and such in the Book of Mormon.
http://quantumleap42.blogspot.com/2015/05/when-year-is-not-year-calendars-and.html
A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Sunday, May 24, 2015. When a year is not a year: Calendars and such in the Book of Mormon. In my previous post. At the end I mentioned another simple misconception. On that note, this example is a little more complex but still on the simple side. But here's the thing, calenders are funny things. 360*600 = 216000 days. 216000/365 = 591.8 solar years. As an interesting side note, the mesoamerican long count calender.
Quantumleap42: The Story Behind Faith in Every Footstep

A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Sunday, July 26, 2009. The Story Behind Faith in Every Footstep. A few years ago I had the opportunity to work with K. Newell Dayley. In the Provo temple. Members of the church may recognize his name as he wrote the music for the hymn Lord, I Would Follow Thee. And the words and music for I Feel My Savior's Love. And the story behind his writing it. He was more than happy to tell me the story. With faith in ev̵...

Editorial Note: This is also posted on my other blog The Eternal Universe. Editorial Note: Sorry I did not post this sooner, but I have been busy and I have also been thinking about this for a few weeks. But several people have asked what I meant by Platonic and Aristotelian world views. This is an attempt at an explanation.]. This different approach...
Quantumleap42: Spiritual Homelessness
http://quantumleap42.blogspot.com/2009/04/spiritual-homelessness.html
A blog by an astrophysicist mostly about things that have nothing to do with astrophysics. Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Because I have chosen to study physics I frequently am asked by people, "How do you reconcile what you study with your religion? There are even some vehicles. Has a permanent home. By "freeing" themselves from the "shackles" of religion they become spiritual leeches free to drift with every wind of doctrine. Thanks- that was an interesting way to expain. :).
