My Brewing System and Process. My Brewing Process, Updated. June 3, 2015. To start with, my electric coil stove broke for the second time and I just couldn’t use it for brewing anymore. I replaced it with this:. It’s the Avantco 1800 induction burner from here. It’s smaller than the one other induction brewers use, but it plugs into a standard household plug, which was key for my apartment setup. It fits this 8 gallon advanced brew kettle from OBK perfectly. The final piece of the system is a chugger pump.

I have to bottle tonight (Amherst Imperial Stout Sea Gull Dreams Mild. 8230; the imperial stout is tasting great – very Tempest-ish), so I’m going to throw together a quick beer to keep me company. I’ve had a giant 4 oz bag (pillow? Just doing 10L of it. I cannot seem to brew with citra without huge grassy flavours, so this is my attempt at redemption! Continue reading →. The 2014 Brew Plan. What do you think you’re Brewin’? Simple SMASH 6-Pack →. What do you think you’re brewin’? Rye’t On Saison. April 11, 2013. Ok, ok, the name is a work in progress. It’s either that or “How’s She Gettin’ On Rye Saison” but I’ve already punned on b’y with the B’yPA. No matter what, this beer is going to be a Saison and have a lot of Rye. Not too complex this time. If there were a Nelson Sauvin hops anonymous, I would consider joining but find it hard to remain anonymous. I want some of that wine/gooseb...

What do you think you’re Brewin’? Some Stunned B’yPA →. How’d You Brew That? February 2, 2013. First published on “ The Trans-Canada Beer Blog. 8221; January 20, 2013. My goal for this year is to brew a batch of beer every month. It’s a pretty big challenge for me because (a) I live in a small Toronto apartment with no outdoor space and (b) there are lots of great beers around to distract me from drinking homebrew, so my bottles are always tied up! This recipe started as a Founders Porter Clone. That I s...

I started brewing in 2010 which makes 2015 my five year anniversary, so really wanted to make 2014 a big year for my brewing. I spent more time brewing in 2014 than any other year of my life. I produced 37 unique beer in batch sizes from 3L to 20L brining me to a total volume of 375L. And that’s not counting the test batches we did for Habits! My first sour mash went really nicely and turned out as...

Two Re-brews, Pepperrell Porter and Lauds. Results of the GCHC →. Trying to Keep Up! April 5, 2014. Wow It’s been a busy winter for homebrewing. I can’t seem to keep my blogging up to pace with my brewing! My last post talked about my Porter and Lauds, but since then I’ve brewed a table beer, a sour mash (more on that in another post about to come), a cider, a juniper smoke beer, a brett c. pale ale, and an American strong ale. So, more about those below. Aim for 1.030 (17). On to the juniper smoke beer.

This is what the kitchen looks like both before and after a brewday. Most of brewing is cleaning, so starting with a clean kitchen is key. I design my beers in Beer Smith, but I sanity check them by hand writing them into my logbook and printing them out and walking through the brew. While a use a thermapen for most measurements, hav...

What Happens in a Mash? | Upalong Brewing

Foolish Gommel – A Zombie Dust-ish Pale Ale. Two Re-brews, Pepperrell Porter and Lauds →. What Happens in a Mash? January 10, 2014. Often, when talking about homebrew with folks who are either new to the hobby or who just drink beer, explaining malts and the mashing process is often the hardest part. In this post, I want to try to explain the mashing process in non-technical and straightforward language. Though warning I do present the technical terms when they arise! A pot of wort heating up to boil.
