Grow a Loaf of Bread

Grow a Loaf of Bread. Friday, October 18, 2013. We Grew TWO Loaves of Bread! On Saturday, October 12th we finally baked the bread that we started making on April 20th. It took us 176 days to make the field, plant the wheat, harvest it, thresh, winnow, mill it into flour, and then bake it into two loaves just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving! Ready to make our Bread! Following Jean Pare's Instructions EXACTLY. Almost ready to put the first loaf in the oven! And just like that, LOAF ONE WAS DONE! All ther...

Grow a Loaf of Bread: April 2013

http://growaloafofbread.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Grow a Loaf of Bread. Tuesday, April 30, 2013. We Clear a Bit of Land. Good bye Old Swing Set. How much wheat are we starting with? With the snow finally melting the swings came down on Sunday, April 28. We should easily have enough land with good sun to grow our tiny wheat field beside the slide and the monkey bars. So, we plan to sow one pound of seed into 32 s.f. of land. That is all we know so far. Monday, April 22, 2013. We Plan to Grow a Loaf of Bread. Here is what we are starting with:.

Grow a Loaf of Bread: June 2013

http://growaloafofbread.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Grow a Loaf of Bread. Thursday, June 20, 2013. We Thin the Wheat and Battle Bunnies. Once the wheat emerged it only took a few days for us to see that we had planted far too much, and that the field would have to be thinned. Thinning the Wheat (with a really big knife). Another problem we had came in the form of hungry bunnies. It has been hard to get a picture of the critters, but they were eating some of the wheat. The Wheat at the far left: Chewed to stubble by bunnies. That is all we know so far.

Grow a Loaf of Bread: August 2013

http://growaloafofbread.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Grow a Loaf of Bread. Sunday, August 25, 2013. We Harvested the Wheat! Saturday, August 24th was a beautiful sunny day, and since it was 91 days since the wheat emerged we decided to harvest it. Finding the seed in the husk. Since our field is so small (32 s.f., or 4x8 feet) we kept the harvesting method really simple.shears and scissors! No combines, no sickles, and no scythes. Kitchen scissors proved to be the best tool for us. We hand-tied each sheaf (or bundle) of wheat with some yarn. Once the harve...

Grow a Loaf of Bread: May 2013

http://growaloafofbread.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Grow a Loaf of Bread. Monday, May 27, 2013. The Wheat Has Sprouted! On May 26th we noticed that something like grass was growing in our field. We decided to let it grow and not pick it until we could decide if it was a weed or the wheat. Growing along the lines where we planted. May 27th. Look! Some rows are faster than others. Watching it pop up is surprising - it seems like the wheat is busting right through the soil, and picking up large chunks as it emerges. Look at it lift the soil! Our next step wi...

Grow a Loaf of Bread: September 2013

http://growaloafofbread.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Grow a Loaf of Bread. Saturday, September 21, 2013. We Threshed and Winnowed the Wheat! We were very busy after school on Monday September 16th! Our friend, Brittany, was over to visit and the weather was good, so we did some "wheat work". Time to make a threshing floor! We used a piece of wood from the garage and a few old play mats to set up a hard and clean spot in the yard. Then we covered it with a bed sheet, and held it in place with some chairs and wood, since it was a windy day. Our method worked...
