A Little Natural History: September 2014

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Thursday, 4 September 2014. Our first stop at Arne was a yard where timber and other materials had been dumped. Vehicles have disturbed the ground here, leaving seasonally wet bare ground: just the place to look for rare plants. Mossy Stonecrop. Was here, growing next to the shocking purple and yellow flowers of Sharp-leaved Fluellen. Or between Creeping Cinquefoil and Tormentil.

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Sunday, 22 June 2014. Happy birthday, Tyler. Which is host to a couple of uncommon weevils. The bigger one is Ceutorhynchus rapae. Similar to the common obstrictus. Black and slender and untoothed in obstrictus. The small one is Ceutorhynchus pulvinatus. More densely covered in white scales but otherwise like the very common typhae. Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis. How long will th...

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Monday, 24 March 2014. I had only a couple of hours this morning before I had to leave for the airport. I spent the first of them among the orchids on the slope below the cabin. Ophrys. Orchids are one of the best things in the world. Among David Attenborough’s prolific outputs is a series called Attenborough’s Ark. The Mediterranean is the centre of diversity of Ophrys. There are m...

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Friday, 16 August 2013. The day of the Olinguito. Back at the lodge, the field guide allowed us to identify our mammal as an Olingo Bassaricyon gabii. Soon after I returned to Britain, Roland Kays contacted me. He said that he had seen my Olingo photos and that they were of an undescribed species that he and his colleagues were working on! Wednesday, 14 August 2013. Is often feature...

A Little Natural History: Slow progress

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Friday, 20 March 2015. I have been doing lots of little bits on the weevil guide, but nothing yet amounts to a sizeable chunk that deals with a single group of species. It feels like I have little to show for my efforts, but it is useful to know how I am doing. So I have put two accounts, one to Polydrusus. And one to the wetland Gymnetron. And a guide to Sitona here:.

Mr Eele's Birding Blog: June 2015
http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Saturday, 13 June 2015. After being delayed we were relieved when the boat company said they were sailing so we headed down to the quay. We were booked onto the all day trip which meant we were landing on Staple in the morning then onto Inner Farne for the afternoon. The trip over was a little choppy but we were fortunate to be sat on the 'right' side and stayed dry. First stop was a brief look at the grey seals hauled out on the rocks before moving to Staple. The birds had no fea...

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Wednesday, 18 March 2015. Most of the best trips seem to come from a chance conversation and this recent one was no different. We didn't really think he was serious when Roger said 'why don't you come to Uganda ringing? A few months later our flights were booked! Roger recommended a local guide called Harriet (let me know it you would like her details) and things were sorted. She organised all the accommodation, transport, access to the parks, pretty much everything. Titchwell - 2...

Mr Eele's Birding Blog: May 2014
http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Tuesday, 6 May 2014. After an interesting day ringing at Holme yesterday I offered to go back this morning and help Sophie and Gary with whatever they needed (twitch control, extracting birds etc). By the time I arrived, Sophie had already caught a few birds including the subalpine warbler from yesterday. I did manage to get a few quick shots in the ringing room but the light wasn't great! A great end to the weekend :-). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). UK - 395, Steppe grey shrike.

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Sunday, 31 August 2014. Even before the report of a white rumped sandpiper on the fresh marsh (heard reports ot was a juv sanderling! I had decided to go into the reserve for the evening. A really good choice as the weather was beautiful. A sit on the main path for a bit gave fantastic views of a juv little stint feeding within 10m of the path with a little group of ruff. Stunning little birds although it was a bit too mobile to get some decent photos. 3 juv little stint. Just as ...
