Rio Dulce: guatemalatrek

Rio Dulce is both a town and the name of the river. Today we took a boat trip along the river to Livingston, a town populated by the Garifuna. But first things first. The landscape has changed dramatically since we left Xela. Here I feel as if I'm in a Gaugin painting. Everyone travels by boat, mostly dugout canoe, though there are of course some motorboats. From our lancha. Aside from gazing at the lifestyle, we stopped in for lunch to eat tapado. I should use it myself! It was quite filling and tasty.

I am now deep in the heart of Peten province, a mere hour away from Tikal, mayan ruin and national park. So much has happened, such long journeys and such amazing experiences. Here are but a few. Why had we traveled so far? So I can say I jumped about 4m into a dark pool in the midst of a cave by candlelight. Oh it was remarkable! As it turns out, you can do partial weeks so after my whirlwind tour of Lago de Atitlan this weekend, I'll be back in Xela for two more days of school before setting out again for the wilds of Guatemala with four amigos. Now what kinds of discussions would we be having in the United States if it was founded on Mayan cosmology instead of Judeo-Christian? There's not much argument about astronomy anymore in the Church, but would the whole schism between science and religion be eliminated? Post a new comment.
