Chile is the longest and thinnest of Latin American countries but with such an amazing variety of scenery and history. The original inhabitants were the Quechuan people in the north (Incas) and the Araucanians in the south. After the Spanish Conquest and until the 19 th century, the north remained part of Peru while the south remained under the control of the Araucanians. After independence from Spain , the first president had the unlikely name of Bernardo O’Higgins!

San Pedro de Timote. Uruguay is possibly the most European of Latin American countries boasting over 200 years of democracy. It is also one of the safest countries in the world. In fact, in Montevideo, the capital, there is an English speaking community which still uses phrases from a bygone age such as ‘what-ho’ and ‘jolly good show’ and where they still call each other ‘bunny’! Montevideo has an amazing coastline where even the Argentinians go for their holidays.
