Comics, Literacy, Education. Did I mention comics? Monday, May 4, 2009. As I mentioned in my last post, I am just beginning work on a book-length project that uses Marvel comics circa 1976 as its frame. The natural question, of course, is why this focus? Why not DC 1985 or Charlton 1968? Or why not Marvel in the 1960s? Let me explain. In March we taped an episode The Comic Book Syndicate. For example, in reading those issues of Marvel Team-Up, not only was I fascinated by the superheroes and their predic...

My Panelists Archive: The Playwright: the Page and the Stanza. The real highlight of my next piece for The Panelists. Wasn't so much the essay but the comments section, which will go live as an archive here on this blog in about twelve hours. We were doing a week on the work of Eddie Campbell, and I came out of semi-retirement as a comics critic to write this:. As part of our week devoted to the works of Eddie Campbell, I’d like to expand on something Charles noted about. Books are full of single-page an...

Has been my primary (if intermittent) review-site since 2006. For a while it was a standalone monthly review; then it was a part of the tcj.com empire; and now it is a personal review journal, mostly highlighting comics I enjoy. I have been writing a regular review column for Public Books. As faculty liaison at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at Ohio State I help out with exhibitions and campus and community outreach and tend the new guttergeek browsing library in the reading room.
