Populate and Perish: November 2013
http://populateandperish.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Overpopulation – the human plague. Some recent letters concerning population growth projections in Australia (see my previous entry):. Growing out of control. Australia’s rapid population growth has had some media attention again in the last couple of months. As reported in the Herald-Sun. 25/9, Melbourne is the fastest-growing capital city and the downside of this is all too apparent:. MELBOURNE’S population is booming, with 1350 people moving in each week, a government report says. A report released by...

Overpopulation – the human plague. Some recent letters concerning population growth projections in Australia (see my previous entry):. The Victorian State of the Environment Report (2008) reveals that population growth and human activity have had ongoing detrimental effects on soils, coastal areas, marine and river systems, climate and biodiversity. All indications are that Victoria has reached the limit of its capacity to support human populations without irreversible environmental destruction. A coalit...

Populate and Perish: One-child no longer
http://populateandperish.blogspot.com/2013/11/one-child-no-longer.html
Overpopulation – the human plague. As part of a social reform initiative announced last week, China is to “relax” its one-child policy. There have been exceptions to it for years for certain groups, but this makes it officially-approved. Naturally my reaction was dismay (“the environment is now f*cked”). The policy has been criticized by some for being inhumane, but it somewhat it at least kept the country’s already-huge population from becoming even larger. View my complete profile. Populate and Perish: September 2013
http://populateandperish.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Overpopulation – the human plague. I recently came across a link to a short story by Gregory Benford,. Given my outlook you can safely guess I didn’t see this scheme as a bad thing. I suppose that measures such as IVF from stored embryos, cloning and artificial wombs could be used to get around the virus, but the last two technologies are not developed and the first can be difficult to achieve. Melbourne most livable (again). Melbourne was voted most livable for this year. I dislike this sort of publicit...

Populate and Perish: Melbourne most livable (again)
http://populateandperish.blogspot.com/2013/09/melbourne-most-livable-again.html
Overpopulation – the human plague. Melbourne most livable (again). Melbourne was voted most livable for this year. Again for health care, education and infrastructure. Which bemused many, including me, as there is much to be improved in all these areas. It is certainly a better place to live than many other cities, but far from perfect. Which is dismayingly obvious to anyone who has lived here for a while – infrastructure is not coping with the influx. With a rapidly growing population squeezing into roa...

Populate and Perish: 23 million and counting
http://populateandperish.blogspot.com/2013/05/23-million-and-counting.html
Overpopulation – the human plague. 23 million and counting. Australia’s population officially. Reached 23 million on 23 April. A milestone that was generally reported positively. The population is small compared to many other countries (as is pointed out with tedious regularity), but Australia does not have a great amount of habitable land, so most of the population tends to live along the coastline, and much of that is clumped into the major cities. Greater Dandenong Council has given VicRoads the go-ah...

Overpopulation – the human plague. Melbourne on the path to ruin. Haven’t written for a while, though there have been quite a few articles on population issues; I feel disheartened that nothing ever seems to change regarding the problems faced, and that governments and business remain in denial of overpopulation’s negative effects. 8220; Fast-growing Melbourne heading towards becoming Australia’s largest city. Populate and Perish: October 2014
http://populateandperish.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Overpopulation – the human plague. Humans increase as wild animals decrease. Another gap in writing, and I again have a huge backlog of articles. Writing just feels pointless at times as few want to acknowledge that human overpopulation is a major problem – certainly not those with influence. A new and horrifying report. Was released in September that predicted the world’s population could climb to. Was also released last month by the. Stating that Earth had lost. Half of its wildlife. He seems to be opt...
