Don Jon's Zen Dragons: Dichotomous Deliberations
http://www.donjonszendragons.com/2013/04/dichotomous-deliberations.html
Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Tuesday, April 30, 2013. There has been a schism in the temple of Zen Dragons. My stated goal for DJZD was an intellectual exercise to design a streamlined and more elegant D&D, making use of the character stats as much as possible and to see where that took me. The emotional driving force for actually doing this though, came from my various dissatisfactions with D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder (what I think of as "modern" D&D). As time went on, as the characters levelled up and gained more...

Don Jon's Zen Dragons: Additional Combat Rules
http://www.donjonszendragons.com/2012/12/additional-combat-rules.html
Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Sunday, December 2, 2012. Some general thoughts and tweaks for combat rules. Wearing heavier armour limits the benefit of a high DEX. If wearing AC over Power level then DEX CB bonus is lost. If wearing AC over DEX bonus, DEX CB bonus is lost. Roll damage as normal, subtract damage from DEX or STR as well as CON. Stat damage from crits is healed alongside CON (i.e. when recovering CON(natural or through healing magic) , recover an equal amount of STR and DEX. Polearms are very long.

Don Jon's Zen Dragons: Species Pieces
http://www.donjonszendragons.com/2012/12/species-pieces.html
Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Thursday, December 13, 2012. Below are my first ideas for different player character races. All stat adjustments are modifier levels, not individual points. CON 10 with a plus 1 takes you to the lowest number of the next bonus level = 13. CON 10 with a minus 1 takes you to the highest number of the previous bonus level = 8. 1 to any stat. 1 Power with bows. 1 Power with armour. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Old School Don Jon. Don Jon's Zen Dragons: September 2013
http://www.donjonszendragons.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Sunday, September 15, 2013. Have you ever noticed that D&D characters get better and better at hitting things but never, ever, get better at defending themselves? As you go up levels, your chance to hit a given armour class improves, but the chance of your being hit is solely dependent on the armour you are wearing and your DEX bonus - the character's fighting skill makes no difference. To make it more interesting to play, without causing power inflation, or adding complex rules.

Don Jon's Zen Dragons: The Marvellous, Metaphysical, Mage Organ!

Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Tuesday, July 9, 2013. The Marvellous, Metaphysical, Mage Organ! Magic users in AD&D are naff. At first level they only get one spell per day, which they have to pre-select, and so pretty much always pick Sleep as all other options are so clearly sub-optimal. The spells themselves in AD&D are great. They are interesting, evocative, and magical, but the vast majority never see the light of day due to the restrictions on selecting and casting spells. In fact it is exactly like memori...

Don Jon's Zen Dragons: Playtest the First
http://www.donjonszendragons.com/2012/12/playtest-first.html
Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Sunday, December 9, 2012. Thanks to Dave and Simon for subjecting themselves and their characters to the first play test. Some of my observations from this are below, and I would appreciate any feedback or thoughts from others. Just doubling damage would give all weapons a chance to penetrate armour (even plate) but even on a good roll they wouldn't do much damage. Although if crit damage is coming off STR and DEX too then it is still quite nasty even if only a couple of points.

Don Jon's Zen Dragons: November 2012
http://www.donjonszendragons.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Don Jon's Zen Dragons. Monday, November 19, 2012. On Scaling At Higher Levels. How do you think that this will scale over levels? Do you see any problems in parts of the system where level dependent benefits are resisted by slower advancing stats? Not sure what you mean by the second sentence? Regarding stat advancement, though it is not canonical for old school D&D, I think it would make sense here. I'm leaning toward giving a bonus modifier level (as per racial bonuses) to one stat every 4 levels.
