Home Brew in Donegal: So you wanna Home Brew, eh?
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/p/so-you-wanna-home-brew-eh.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. So you wanna Home Brew, eh? Jees, will that be enough, lad? Said one to the other. "Never fear,. There's more out back". That easy, eh? Well, yes, in exactly the same way as learning a tune on a tin whistle is easy. Sometimes you’re happy with ‘How Much Is Mary’s Little Doggy In The Mulberry Bush’, and sometimes you crave a little more. Mine's a pint, and. That's a pint of mine! A pile of crushed, pale malt barley. 1 Tank of fuel. A round of beers in a hotel.

Home Brew in Donegal: Hop Plant Bull Shoots
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/2014/04/hop-plant-bull-shoots.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. Thursday, April 3, 2014. Hop Plant Bull Shoots. It's the time of year when hops start having big ideas again. Two sunny days and they're OFF! You may have heard about 'trimming the first gamey shoots', or 'removing the bull shoots' and not been clear which they are. Well, here's a photo. For now though, that is all you need to do with the hops. The second set of shoots will grow at a steadier pace, so you've nothing more to do this week. Brewing hops and herbs.

Home Brew in Donegal: March 2014
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. Sunday, March 2, 2014. Judging at the National Homebrew Club competition. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it! 1st March, St. David's Day, and I've to catch the 0430 bus to Dublin. It's a long trip down, but it's the last in the series of my journey to becoming a judge. It's been emotional. The last beer before lunch. As bus o'clock drew rapidly nearer, the silver medal in category 1 was announced, and it was me! A quick gulp of champagne, a handshake o...

Home Brew in Donegal: Big Richard Thinks...
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/p/big-richard-thinks.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. HBID's mucker, Richard, is a respectable beer conoisseur in our local, and legend of the pub quiz team 'Pure Bongo'. He's on the home brew list, and next up for a review is the Brewferm Triple. I wonder what he'll make of it. The bottle was shared between 3 people and everyone agreed it was a fine brew! Bring on the Brew! More from Richard next time! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Interested in growing your own hops, but not sure where to start? Some tobacco, too!

Home Brew in Donegal: April 2014
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. Friday, April 4, 2014. If your hop plant isn't really taking off already, for example the buds are still at ground level, check the soil for Vine Weevil larvae. These small white grubs, about the size of a two cent coin, eat through the roots around the main plant, and leave your plant struggling to grow. I found 25 in one pot. One is too many. To check your hop:. 1 - give the stump a wiggle. If it's loose then you probably have a problem. Fundamental critter r...

Home Brew in Donegal: Home Life
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/p/home-life.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. The High-Tech Lagering Facility. Welcome to my Home Brewery, set in a small, picturesque town in Inishowen. In addition to buying the occasional tin from the internet, I'm busy with all sorts of home brew related nonsense. For example:. I'm far too precious. So, that's the status quo, but for regular updates, you need this:. I know what you're thinking - A blogger with a girlfriend? But it's true. And she could have an entire bookshelf dedicated. Very excited t...

Home Brew in Donegal: January 2015
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Eyes on the prize. Yeast handling. What's that thing you say about wise men, or the more you know the more you whatever? Well, the same applies in brewing. I've spent the last four years honing my brew kit, my mash efficiency, bottling and kegging, recipes and above all else speed, or brewday efficiency. I'm getting the hang of it now, I think. However, one thing still stands in my way; taking good care of my yeast. Have a microscope, ...

Home Brew in Donegal: Home Made Cider!
http://homebrewindonegal.blogspot.com/p/home-made-cider.html
With the occasional rant about tin openers. I also fell victim of the group buy at the National Homebrew Club. And bought another 50l of apple juice, which has pretty much converted itself into cider. Adding 1 campden tablet per gallon lowers the pH value of the juice enough to inhibit spoilage bacteria, but the 'correct' sacharomyces yeast is happy enough in the acidic environment and pretty much mucks on. After all the natural yeast's hard work I hope I didn't muck it up racking it into a keg. Followin...
