Eating Tokyo

One gyoza at a time. Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Pants, who needs them? Staying at a ryokan is pretty tiring. First there's all the bathing, then all the eating, then the resting to recover from both. Chris contemplates the view from the bath. After bathing, it's time for breakfast. Notice we take all of our meals in a yukata to avoid buttoning pants. This morning's two-sterno breakfast came with a map. Naturally a bath comes after dinner, so you're nice and relaxed for bedtime. Sweet dreams! Sunday was a...

Eating Tokyo: How to make anything delicious

http://www.gyozafan.blogspot.com/2015/04/how-to-make-anything-delicious.html

One gyoza at a time. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. How to make anything delicious. Yesterday's flight to Tokyo was largely uneventful. Food was acceptable, miles better than domestic economy. And I have two new favorite TV shows, Ninniku Banzuke (Unbeatable Banzuke, a proto Ninja Warrior obstacle-course show) and Kobitos (a children's TV show straight from my id). When I got back to the hotel I asked the concierge for last-minute reservation assistance at Sushi Sawada, Den Tokyo, or Ryugin for the next day or...

Eating Tokyo: Hello, Takayama

http://www.gyozafan.blogspot.com/2015/04/hello-takayama.html

One gyoza at a time. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Sunday was a difficult day. We woke up and had breakfast at City Bakery at Shinagawa station. Then we took a four-hour restful train ride from Shinagawa to Takayama, with only a 12-item bento and some sake for lunch. Train service in Japan is pretty incredible. We took the bullet train from Shinagawa to Nagoya, and the Hida line to Takayama. The journey to Takayama is beautiful. Chris seems to enjoy Hidatei Hanougi, our ryokan. Pants, who needs them?

Eating Tokyo: Basement beer is the best beer

http://www.gyozafan.blogspot.com/2015/04/basement-beer-is-best-beer.html

One gyoza at a time. Saturday, April 18, 2015. Basement beer is the best beer. Friday was a day of complete overstimulation. It was a good day. We started out in Shibuya, home to many record stores. The Tower Records there is 7 floors! We didn't get into trouble until RECOfan, though. RECOfan has an overwhelming selection of secondhand LPs, many of them for under 1000 yen. At this point it seemed like a good idea to go back to the basement of the PAL building (where Toriteru is) next to Shinagawa station...

Eating Tokyo: November 2010

http://www.gyozafan.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

One gyoza at a time. Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Yesterday's peripatetic wanderings took us to Arashiyama. A town of shrines, bamboo groves, gardens, and 150 monkeys. At Shigetsu, the Buddhist vegetarian restaurant inside Tenryuji. At the peak of Mount Iwatayama. Back to Kyoto at Nijo Castle. Monday, November 29, 2010. Starting player lineup for. Triple Threat, Tofu! Yesterday's journey took us to Fushimi Inari. Glimpsing these names in Hiking in Japan. I had visions of shrines made of inari sushi. Tako ...

Gyoza

This project was developed at Rails Camp 3 New Zealand. In 2013. It never got much attention since - I'm quite sure I was the only person using it - but really, GitHub pretty much solved the same problem with their live editing and automatic pull requests. Not that I expect anyone will notice, but Gyoza is now retired to save a few hosting dollars. The code remains online and open-sourced. For any curious souls.

Another Whirlwind Adventure | Tales of moving to Hiroshima, and what happened after.

Tales of moving to Hiroshima, and what happened after. Bathing With The White Fox: Yamaguchi City and Yuda Onsen. March 4, 2011. Me, snapping photos in Yamaguchi's circa 1880 City Hall. I also find myself refusing, in the bottom of my neurotic, indecisive little heart, to believe that this is the end of my whirlwind love affair with this place: I want to believe I’ll come back yet again, and next time find a way to make it stick. Fifth round will be the charm, right? Joueiji and Sesshu’s Garden. Perhaps ...
