Sour gas is natural gas that contains hydrogen sulphide (H. S), a colourless flammable compound that has a distinctive "rotten egg" smell. Currently, more than 30 per cent of the natural gas produced in Western Canada is considered sour. This percentage is expected to increase to 40 per cent within the next decade. There are many environmental, health and safety concerns related to sour gas operations. Gas containing even low concentrations of H. S is toxic to human and animals.

S Technologies was incorporated November 12, 1999 to develop a stand-alone hydrogen sulphide disposal process in response to industry need. To date the Company has successfully produced and tested a working model H. S recovery unit and is in the process of developing a full-scale prototype that can convert hydrogen sulphide to elemental sulphur and hydrogen by combining amine scrubbing technologies and the dissociation of H. S using the plasma torch system.
