Area covered by the Project. The Architect of the Hale Mortuary Chapels: Sidney Stapley. He was appointed Surveyor to the Local Board in 1875, and retained the post until he resigned suddenly and without explanation in 1882. He is probably best known as the architect of Holy Trinity Church in Aldershot, the first church to be built there after the arrival of the Army. It is also suggested that he submitted plans for Farnham Maltings, though it is not known whether they were accepted.

Area covered by the Project. Pre-History of Upper Hale. The earliest traces of occupation are on Bricksbury Hill in Upper Hale and its associated plateau, numerous Mesolithic chipping floors occur in this area. The people of this age were nomadic hunters with a distinctive flint working technique, a fairly representative collection of what can be seen in Farnham Museum. With the abandonment of the site it would appear that no permanent occupation of the area took place until the late 18th century.

Area covered by the Project. The area covered by the Hale History Project is the ancient tithing of Badshot, The tithing of Badshot was one of the ten tithings which comprised the hundred of Farnham, itself the westernmost hundred in the county of Surrey. In the medieval period, the only village in the tithing was Badshot with a very small hamlet at Hale. The rest of the tithing was common grazing, the enclosure of which over the centuries has given a distinct character to the various areas.
