Deep Thoughts: The State of the Blog
http://half-integer.blogspot.com/2009/08/state-of-blog.html
Thoughts on cycling, bike/ped advocacy, green living, unschooling, and recreational math. Sunday, August 30, 2009. The State of the Blog. I'm sure anyone who isn't fascinated by math has noticed I haven't posted about parenting or green living lately. Does that mean I haven't been thinking about those things? Or does it mean things have been going well so I haven't had a reason to reflect on them? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. The State of the Blog. A Tale of Two Sequences.
Deep Thoughts: Memoize
http://half-integer.blogspot.com/2009/08/memoize.html
Thoughts on cycling, bike/ped advocacy, green living, unschooling, and recreational math. Sunday, August 16, 2009. I recently came across the computer science concept of memoization. What's cool is that I had made some suggestions on designs at work that amount to the same thing. August 26, 2009 at 10:27 PM. With disk space no longer being a premium as it was in the past, memoization makes perfect sense; processing time is accelerated the next time a value is needed and the trade-off in disk space seems ...

Thoughts on cycling, bike/ped advocacy, green living, unschooling, and recreational math. Sunday, August 30, 2009. I spent a little time looking into Padé approximants, including how well they work for root-finding. These are ratios of polynomials which are used as approximations to other functions. For instance, for both polynomials of order 2, the form is. Note the 1 in the denominator is chosen to avoid the ambiguity of being able to multiply through by a constant. F - F′·x. Deep Thoughts: July 2009
http://half-integer.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Thoughts on cycling, bike/ped advocacy, green living, unschooling, and recreational math. Sunday, July 26, 2009. What is the Nature of Waste? First, don't take my ruminations in this post to mean that I am going to become a profligate consumer of things because I no longer believe in scarcity. I've got a natural inclination to be frugal, and that includes use of resources on general principles. Should every waterfall be diverted and generate hydroelectric energy? Are we negligent in not harvesting it?

Thoughts on cycling, bike/ped advocacy, green living, unschooling, and recreational math. Friday, May 29, 2009. I know I'm breaking the first rule of blogging *. By putting my various unrelated interests into one blog. However, since I expect my readership to be maybe three, if I made a blog for each topic, the average number of readers for each would be .5. So, feel free to use the titles and tags to skip things you aren't interested in. So, what is the idea of this blog? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Organic Learning and Local Food in Southern Maryland. Sunday, December 13, 2009. Your Job as a Parent of an Unschooled Child. The article below was written by Anne Ohman of the Shine With Unschooling group. It is your job to answer their questions, without shame or sarcasm, because all questions are valuable. If you don’t know an answer, it is your job to say, “I don’t know,” and offer to look it up with your child (I tend to say, “Hmmm…I *think* it’s this...It is your job to be interested in the worl...

Organic Learning and Local Food in Southern Maryland. Wednesday, January 13, 2010. My Newest Green Project - Cloth TP. Ok, so I have been thinking what new things I can do to reduce my impact on the Earth. I was casually reading over at The Organic Sister. And came across the idea of cloth bathroom wipes. Because I never thought about it. Now that I have, I am using cloth there too! Step 2: I have stacks of old clothing waiting for a new purpose. I had always assumed I would make cleaning rags, but m...

Organic Learning and Local Food in Southern Maryland. Friday, May 22, 2009. Yesterday morning I worked for about 4 hours on making strawberry jam. I was about up to the canning part when both kids woke up! We had already gone to a new farm (Homestead Farm in Faulkner, MD) to load up on berries for jam so I could start as soon as my eyes were open enough. And the finished jars. 8 quarts of fresh strawberries (which weighed a total of 10 lb 7 oz and measured out to be about 16 c). Thursday, May 21, 2009.

Z's Organic Everything: December 2008
http://zzz-organic.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Organic Learning and Local Food in Southern Maryland. Sunday, December 14, 2008. Wow, is it hard to choose a vehicle to drive these days. First there's safety to consider. If you have an accident like we just had (rolled, spun, and skidded the car), safety is a main priority. I felt like I wanted the exact same car (in my case - a VW Jetta wagon) because it kept me and my kids so safe. Then there's gas mileage. The higher the better for this environmentalist. Yes, that leaves me with precisely zero choic...
