Anna in Indonesia: Update / Toba
http://pedomellonminno.blogspot.com/2010/03/update-toba.html
Sunday, March 28, 2010. No, I am most assuredly still in Indonesia. To be specific, the past weekend I was in North Sumatra, staying on Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic lake! Very exciting. I did some sightseeing while trying to solve my email problem, having a foot infection, and coming down with the flu. (It really seems unfair to get the flu this close to the equator. I've always associated it with cold weather, you know? So, anyway, I'm going to make this short and just put in some pictures!

Anna in Indonesia: September 2009
http://pedomellonminno.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 20, 2009. Today is an Islamic holiday, Idul Fitri. It marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, and the holiday can last about a week. People feast and visit family, and it can be really difficult to get anywhere because the streets can be packed from all the travelers. We saw a monkey. Can you see it? It's right there in the middle. Looks like a macaque, don't you think? All in all it was a really nice day. Now here's an unrelated pretty picture (of a sunrise):. The food is cheap...

Anna in Indonesia: January 2010
http://pedomellonminno.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 18, 2010. So, it's been a while since my last post, but this is mostly because I was out of the country for a while, then I was in the country but away from home, and finally because I had four hundred photos or so to sort through for the blog. (Be assured that you're getting the best of the best.). Anyway, we are allowed to leave the country once during our grant period, for up to two weeks, so I went with some other teacher friends to Thailand and Cambodia. That's me, Alexa, and Thom...

Anna in Indonesia: August 2007
http://pedomellonminno.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 19, 2007. Tuesday, August 14, 2007. The Hippodrome was a long arena/racetrack, with three big columns in the center. This is the brazen column. It is believed to have been cased in bronze, which was then stripped off and stolen during the 4th crusade. It's not in the best shape because of that and because, apparently, the Janissaries used to climb it as a feat of bravery. I believe Constantine erected this tower. This dome is a fountain put in by Kaiser Wilhelm. Our section of the city is ...

Sunday, September 23, 2007. Zooming forward in time, here is a picture from the Chora Church, which is famous for its many mosaics and frescoes. This mosaic shows the death of Mary. I thought this was particularly interesting because Jesus is holding a baby in his arms- that baby is actually Mary's soul. Weird, huh? I'm not sure when we went to this museum (church), because apparently I neglected to write about it in my journal. But it was a little later. I think that's what it looks like. Right now I'm ...

Anna in Indonesia: A Naturalist's Guide to My Home
http://pedomellonminno.blogspot.com/2010/04/naturalists-guide-to-my-home.html
Monday, April 26, 2010. A Naturalist's Guide to My Home. Did you know that Indonesia is the number three country for terrestrial (land) biodiversity? Well, I'm certainly seeing that, because it seems like every week some new kind of organism moves into my home. So here's a little list of what's living with me. 2 Moths. Most of the moths I get are really tiny, but I dutifully got air-freshening moth-repellent for my closet. They're not really a problem. I wish the geckos would instead eat. 7 Cockroaches&#...

Anna in Indonesia: December 2009
http://pedomellonminno.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 24, 2009. Well, Happy Holidays to all. I'm on my Christmas vacation right now, hanging out in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with my friend Mer (Grinnellian working for an NGO outside the city here). We're going to spend the holiday at the spa, getting massages and stuff, and also eating a LOT of food. There are a lot of tourists here, but otherwise Christmas isn't a big holiday here. Anyway, I hope everyone is having a good holiday. It's a little hard to believe that it's Christmas, becaus...

Sunday, August 30, 2009. I originally wrote this at 1am, but the internet was shoddy, so it's going up now. Jakarta is 12 hours ahead of Central time). Here's a picture at the airport in Hong Kong:. Stormy skies over Singapore:. The beginning of the flight to Jakarta was pretty bumpy, since we were flying straight through rainclouds. But we made it to Jakarta! These pictures are from the balcony of my hotel room. Saturday, August 29, 2009. Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Some info about where I'm going. The ci...
