Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Tuesday, June 17, 2014. A Visit to Bruekner Rhododendron Gardens. Was only 2 years ago that I heard about the Bruekner Rhododendron Gardens located in Mississauga, Ontario. My dad told me about it, his hiking group had included it in one of their spring hikes. As with most gardens this one has a history. From the website:. Many of Dr Brueckner's beloved rhodos were donated to, and are grown, in these gardens. June 17, 2014 at 11:50 ...

http://gardeningpomona.blogspot.com/2014/05/indigo-bunting-in-garden.html
Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Saturday, May 17, 2014. Indigo Bunting in the Garden. I had a rare sighting this week of the small bird called the Indigo Bunting. It is found on the eastern side of North America and prefers woodland clearings and borders. According to the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, I saw a male in his first spring plumage. She was lucky to catch them in her neighborhood of Niagara Falls USA in the past week or so.

http://gardeningpomona.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Friday, February 28, 2014. Nova Scotia - Provincial Post. The mayflower, or trailing arbutus, is probably the smallest shrub I have ever seen. It is a creeping shrub, hence its scientific moniker repens. And can spread to 3 feet at the most. The genus name Epigaea is from the Greek epi. Meaning 'on' and gaea. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries mayflower was collected heavily. Most likely its heady fragrance and early bloo...

http://gardeningpomona.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Monday, November 25, 2013. Often I wonder if they are there all along, hiding in plain sight, and I just don't see them. Or am I some lucky gal who happened to be looking out the right window at the right time? I have lived in this house for 12 years now and this is the first time I have seen an Eastern Towhee. Female. Beautifully. Striking. Plumage. How can I not help but admire this bird who knows a great bird bath. The sun was ou...

Gardening Pomona: A Truly Stellar Pink
http://gardeningpomona.blogspot.com/2014/06/a-truly-stellar-pink.html
Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Monday, June 9, 2014. A Truly Stellar Pink. Last summer I planted my first dogwood tree. Choosing it was quite the challenge since I wanted the native Cornus florida but was very aware of the anthracnose problems it could attract. I did not want the straight kousa, although there is a mature tree down the street that has not yet flowered but when it does hold on to your hat! June 9, 2014 at 10:17 PM. You seem to have made a very wis...

Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Saturday, May 31, 2014. A Sea of Sherwood Purple. About five years ago I purchased two plants of a low growing phlox that I planted under a. Black Walnut tree. It thrived and so I cut long ends off the plants and replanted the ends without amendments or fanfare. At one point early on I lost the plant tags and tried for a couple of years to locate the same phlox, but in vain it turned out. Today it looks like this. This fellow did no...

Playing with natives and the trials and tribulations of my shady garden. Saturday, June 29, 2013. Hamilton Beach : the other side. I have posted a couple of times about the Burlington beach. Walk I do frequently with a walking friend. This time we are are crossing the great divide, the water way that separates our two fair cities. Shall we take that walk? Naturally, a walk starts off in the parking lot. You may remember the lift bridge. A first view of Burlington. A first view of Hamilton. Pollution has ...
