Musings on Motherhood: Lovely Charlie
http://vanhimbergen.blogspot.com/2014/10/lovely-charlie.html
Sunday, October 12, 2014. You showed up at my bedside at 3:30 am buck naked and crying, asking if I could help you find your Ninja Turtle mask. Charlie, where are your clothes? I was getting dressed. I can't find my Ninja Turtle mask. There was worry and desperation in your voice. I got out of bed, foggy, confused about your nakedness, puzzled by your alertness at this hour of the night. You took me downstairs. I turned on the kitchen light. Yes, I remember. You're such a good boy, Charlie. Thank you for...

Musings on Motherhood: Envy
http://vanhimbergen.blogspot.com/2014/11/envy.html
Thursday, November 6, 2014. A momma sloth carries her baby around for the first year of life. She hangs from tree branches and climbs from limb to limb gathering leaves with her sloth baby clinging to her fur all the while. They're never apart. Baby grabs on with her three-toed paws so Momma never has to let go. Mommy, will you sing us that song you've been singing about the river? I can't, Finny. I'm sorry. I have to go get Gideon. It's just me right now and he's upset.". This time of night after Finny ...

Musings on Motherhood: November 2013
http://vanhimbergen.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 15, 2013. I crept out of my room at 2:30 pm after my alarm went off. Charlie was asleep and Finny was. I promised him I would come get him after thirty minutes of quiet time, which means you may no longer need a nap, but Mommy still does. His door was closed and he was so quiet I thought maybe he had fallen asleep. As I slowly opened the door to see where he ended up, I discovered a treasure, something I’ve been anxiously awaiting for quite some time now—Finny, the Artist. For an hour an...

Musings on Motherhood: September 2013
http://vanhimbergen.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 20, 2013. In an interview I once saw with Mike Myers, he revealed that there was big pressure to be funny in his family. If a visitor came to their house and was not witty enough, his dad would say, “Not funny. Can’t come in.”. He does impressions, makes faces, wears silly costumes, and does a killer robot dance. Sometimes, he’s two-year-old funny. The kind of funny that just comes from being two and saying things like, “I bonked my pants! After we watched Princess and the Frog. Who has...

Thursday, January 22, 2015. 8220;Daddy, you have your girl socks on.” How does he know that a little bit of a polka-dot makes David’s socks a little more feminine? 8220;Startin’ to choke,” he taunts when David starts missing baskets on Wii three-point challenge. 8220;You treat me like an inferior! 8221; he exclaimed to me a couple days ago when I was telling him to go upstairs and get dressed. 8220;Do you know what inferior means? 8221; I asked. 8220;No. Daddy said it this morning.”. Musings on Motherhood: March 2014
http://vanhimbergen.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 10, 2014. Last year, I would tell people winters in Minneapolis are not that bad. I would say at least we can play in the snow, ice skate at the park, go sledding, be out in it. In Cincinnati, it's just wet. You can't play outside when it's wet, but you can play outside when there's snow. I would rather have snow than puddles any day. And Minnesota was not alone. The Polar Vortex dipped deep and North and South both got a taste for the sting of the arctic. We tried not to be crabby,...And y...
