WEALDEN IRON - A BRIEF HISTORY. This iron lump, or ‘bloom’, contained a high degree of cinder which was then either purified by hammering into a solid bar or forged immediately into tools or weapons. Bloomeries were often sited near streams, where high banks exposed geological seams, allowing the easy identification of ore. Streams provided water to cool the iron and forge tools, but water power. THE SURVIVING PONDS

Few ponds are signposted, but most are least partially accessible from a footpath. These are often near or form part of long distance paths, such as the Sussex Border Path or the High Weald Landscape Trail. Robust ramblers can therefore enjoy the ponds as part of longer walks, and indeed such routes can be found on some local websites. The grass meadow bed of the former Ashburnham Furnace Pond.
