Arctic skuas are the smaller but faster and more aerodynamic cousins of the Great skua. Is the largest skua in the northern hemisphere, breeding each summer in northern Scotland, Iceland, and the Faeroe Islands. 60% of the global population breed in Scottish colonies, the most significant of which are shown here. There are an estimated 16,000 breeding pairs of Great skuas in the world, all of whom breed in the northern hemisphere, mainly in Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Scotland. An estimated 60% of this global population breed in Great Britain, specifically Scotland. In other words, conservation of the Scottish breeding populations is critical to the whole species. The skies around the ship have been largely empty although a very showy Masked booby. Put on a show as it chased the flying fish. A day later one of its' cousins showed up in the form of a Brown booby. Again feasting on the flying fish but on this occasion keeping a greater distance from my vantage point. Very inquisitive NBW- following the ship! Whilst on a site survey off the south west of Greenland I was lucky to get some amazing views of these lovely animals. Welcome to the website of the Handa Island Skua Project. Skuas are among the least known but most charismatic of Britain's seabirds. Are in dramatic decline and may soon disappear from Britain's shores, while the Great skua. Or "bonxie") is controversial because of its widely debated effect on other seabird populations. We have been monitoring and studying both of these species at their most important site in West Scotland since the year 2000. As well as an overview of the results and ongoing activities.
