Monthly Archives: June 2013. It’s the little things. June 19, 2013. I love Japan. Like, really love it. And obviously, I love all the big stuff that makes up Japan; the people, the manners, the food, the beautiful landscape, the two distinct cultures (ancient and contemporary), but I find it’s all the little tiny things filling the cracks between the big ideas, the things you don’t read about in travel books, that make Japan as special as it is. 1 The damp towels. 4 Watching people bow into the phone.

Happy Birthday in Japan (again). A broader education →. June 11, 2013. I have a bit of an embarrassing collection, and I think it’s time for me to talk about it. I collect Hello Kitty phone charms from every single prefecture I visit, which means I currently have 26 tiny, ridiculous Hello Kitty charms hanging on my bedroom wall. It’s the kind of thing I would never have imagined myself doing before I moved here, but now it’s kind of an obsession. I can get the Yamaguchi Kitty! The Kittys are usually very...

Monthly Archives: February 2013. I’m a Japan Tourist. February 28, 2013. Exciting news of this week, I got some of my travel writing up on a Japanese tourism website. It’s nothing special, but it’s nice to see my name on the interwebs! The first article, about an onsen in Gifu, can be found here:. And the second article, about an oyster restaurant I visited, is here:. No Dogs in the Ocean. February 17, 2013. I found this at Ikumi Beach in Kochi. If someone could explain it to me I would be very grateful.

Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can confuse the hell out of you! The End of My Japanese Life. October 26, 2013. I’m writing this sitting in a hostel in Hanoi, Vietnam, after leaving Japan yesterday. The last few months in Tokyo have been amazing. I feel so wowed that I had the chance to spend some time in such an incredible city, and I was so lucky to meet the wonderful people that I did. As I signed a form rescinding my Japanese residency, it suddenly hit me. That was it. The place I had c...I wal...

The End of My Japanese Life →. Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can confuse the hell out of you! October 1, 2013. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the odd encounter with luxury, but I do usually find it quite bewildering. A few days ago, there was a dish of tiny bacon bits next to the dishes of cereal at the buffet. I assumed it was tiny pieces of dried fruit and put it on my coco pops and yogurt. I wasn’t mad when I realised, just confused. Is bacon on cereal a luxury thing? All in all, it’s probably a ...

It costs $200 to remove an air conditioner in Japan. The air conditioner is not the standard American Wal-Mart heat wave window-mounted rattler; it is a wall-mounted unit with a hose that runs through a wall to a fan on the veranda. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Design history and theory. Wednesday, April 1, 2009. During the renaissance, Europeans looked back to the classical Greek and Roman styles as the source. For their buildings. After the baroque period, “Architects were turning increasingly to specific source models, in a wide variety of historical styles, resulting in revivals of Greek and Roman Classicalism.” (Roth 461). Some greeted this new Industrial Revolution and tried to push this new technology to its highest potential t...

I was being very stoic and grown up about the whole process, and hadn’t cried at all, or even thought too much about what I was doing, and then I got to customs. As I signed a form r...
