In 1857 Patrick Duffy(1804-1889) and Alice Burns Duffy(1812-1863) came to America with 14 of their 15 children. The eldest son, Michael, had immigrated a year earlier. They joined Michael and lived in Independence Iowa until 1860 when they purchased property in Lester Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. Catherine Donohue emigrated from Ireland with her family and settled in New Richmond, Wisconsin, a farming area heavily settled by Irish immigrants. She married Michael Martin in New Richmond. He had also emigrated from Ireland. In 1876 Mike and Catherine and their young children moved to Wall Lake Iowa where Mike farmed 640 acres and raised Aberdeen Angus cattle. Anthony Moran (1834-1909) was born in County Mayo, Ireland. We don’t know when he emigrated. Family lore says he came to America with a brother, worked the coal mines in Pennsylvania, and had a first wife (name unknown) who died and left him with young children. Was born in either New York State or Pennsylvania of Irish parents. Family lore has the family comin. G west in a covered wagon. In the 1850 census Joanna is 8 years old, living in Keokuk Iowa with a mother, father, brother, and sisters. Her father Edward Geary was a walking boss for the railroad. Edward Geary died of cholera. By 1860 her mother Margaret has remarried a man named Dempsey who is farming in Monroe County Iowa. It is here that Joanna meets and falls in love with James Cummins. July 24, 2013.
