Surviving the Suburbs: Homemade for the Holidays - Sewing
http://happilyhome.blogspot.com/2014/12/homemade-for-holidays-sewing.html
Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". Monday, December 15, 2014. Homemade for the Holidays - Sewing. Today was a real first for me, and I quietly thanked, several times, Mrs. Abraham, who was my Home Ec. sewing teacher in high school. It's a bit of an interesting story - that one. My sophomore year, I signed up to take French II, but when I arrived on the first day of my sophomore year and discovered that the French teacher had retired, and her replacement stood at the front of the classroom speaking ...
Surviving the Suburbs: May 2015
http://happilyhome.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". Sunday, May 31, 2015. I've been thinking, lately, that I just need a new uniform, and I actually tried wearing my old camouflage, but I found that people looked at me oddly when I wore my cut-off BDUs. So, I stopped. My grandmother was an incredible woman - very frugal, perhaps because she didn't have much choice, because they didn't have a lot of money to spend, or perhaps because she grew up in an economically depressed part of the country during a time when no ...

Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". There were moments of humor and tenderness that a reader would not expect from a book that is geared towards someone trying to prepare for TEOTWAWKI. In the end Wendy imagines a world after the 21 days. It is a world of lower energy but a connectedness with the earth and her community that adds a depth to life that one does not associate with life in the suburbs. read more . Surviving the Suburbs: July 2015
http://happilyhome.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". Sunday, July 12, 2015. I had a few minutes this week to start cutting out the pattern for my new skirt. I bought the pattern at the end of May. And then, purchased some fabric a couple of weeks ago. Things often move very slowly here, and I fit in new projects wherever I can. It's a process. I cut the pattern out, and then, stuff happened, and I didn't get around to sewing it until this weekend. I had some awesome helpers while I was sewing. Links to this post.
Surviving the Suburbs: Sustainable Quickie II
http://happilyhome.blogspot.com/2009/04/sustainable-quickie-ii.html
Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". Sunday, April 19, 2009. In the list of 100 Items to Disappear First. Propane fuel canisters) is number six, which leads me to believe it's a pretty important item, in the author's opinion. As such, I think a dependence on those things as an alternative. Is going to leave many of us sorely disappointed. The list advises that one can not have enough Coleman fuel, and if one intends to be solely dependent on one's camp stove for cooking, I would heartily agree. They ...

The Maine Outdoorsman: Beat Summer's HEAT with DULUTH!
http://www.themaineoutdoorsman.com/2015/07/beat-summers-heat-with-duluth.html
Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Beat Summer's HEAT with DULUTH! The hike to the summit was typical for summer in Maine, hot, muggy and buggy. Tough conditions requiring long sleeves and pants to keep the biting hordes away but also requiring a light enough fabric to allow one to remain dry and comfortable. These are not the conditions where cotton thrives, as once damp; cotton stays damp and uncomfortable and tends to rub a person in the most delicate places. And Dry on the Fly. For more Maine outdoor adventure p...

Mandy's Reading Room: Out Stealing Horses
http://mandysreadingroom.blogspot.com/2012/08/out-stealing-horses.html
Monday, August 6, 2012. If I had punched the man in Karlstad, my life would have been a different life, and I a different man. And it would be foolish to maintain, as so many men do, that it would have come ot the same thing. it would not.". These are longer quotes than I usually include about a book, but I found myself musing over these passages after finishing the book and so I wanted to include them both. Labels: 3.5 Stars. Sunday, August 14, 2011. Misleading, of course. As always. But unforgettable. A miracle was occurring. In the span of one lunchtime, music, the universal common language, would come to provide me with permanent protection in the schoolyard, and a safe conduct pass into even the darkest corners of the Covered Area. Monday, September 5, 2011. Independence Day Challenge: 5 Sept. 2011. It now looks like both Katia and Lee will miss us, which works for me! We are still ready, if a bit shorter on cat food. I'll get more end of this week. Pulled up the tomatoes (all done, except the Sungold. VERY happy with that variety! 2 Waste not (preparations):. Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Independance Day - 30 August 2011. Hurricane Irene went past us on Saturday. We didn't even lose power. Why would it? We were prepared =) Which is just as well, since Katia might visit next week. I'm modifying my version of this checklist again - I do so little gardening that I'm changing it to one item rather than 3. So far, the nice shady patio seems to do best growing leaves and sweet potatoes. 6 Crafting: I re-started a cross-stitch project - a dragon stocking. Can we ho...

Surviving the Suburbs
Reviews of "Surviving the Apocalypse .". Tuesday, February 27, 2018. Heating with Wood Q&A. Fellow blogger, Mavis Butterfield, is moving to New England. Since New England gets a lot colder than over there on the other side of the continent during the winter, she had a few questions about heating with wood. As a decade-long veteran of heating and living with wood heat, I (naturally) had some answers. Mavis: Is it really practical to heat an entire home with wood heat? Mavis: How about a tea kettle? Mavis:...
