Stories about our time in the field. 20 July 2013 – a reptile at sea…. Bull;July 28, 2013 • Leave a Comment. Amazingly, at around 4 nautical miles past Cape Point, Barrie picked up a Wandering-type Albatross at long distance flying parallel to the boat, and the views we were able to accumulate between rolls appeared very similar to last week’s mega albatross. Unfortunately, the bird disappeared into some rain and despite following its course for some time we were unable to relocate it. We have finally re...

Stories about our time in the field. 18 August 2013 – an 8 albatross day! Approaching the first trawler. After adding a Soft-plumaged Petrel, Northern Giant Petrel and our eighth albatross of the day, an adult Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross, to the list we reluctantly set off homewards as we were running a little late. Our voyage homewards was punctuated by occasional great looks at Great-winged Petrels and further Giant Petrels. Approaching the second trawler. By hardakerwildlife on September 29, 2013.

Stories about our time in the field. 03 August 2013 – no cat spotted…. With the second sighting of a Leopard at Rooiels in a couple of months, we decided that this would be a worthwhile spot to visit for a morning, so we took a leisurely drive out there this morning to see what we could find. It was once again reinforced that, if we ever do get to see a Leopard in the province, it is going to be because we just luckily bumped into it rather than us actually going to search for one…. This is a writing page to complement my photograph page on www.basilARTinc.com. My Travels: Gentoos Being Born. February 26, 2014. The Vavilov had sailed on the north of the South Shetland Islands because thick ice prevented us entering the Antarctic Sound. Now we had turned and were sailing in the channel between the islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. On ether side of the ship rose towering black cliffed mountains with thick glaciers cutting the valleys right to the sea. After a while I climbed a shor...

This is a writing page to complement my photograph page on www.basilARTinc.com. Reliving the Photographic Tradition. March 19, 2014. My classic Olympus OM-1. A few weeks ago a plan came together that had been hatched four years ago. I made a major challenge to myself, but hedged my bets. The challenge was to embrace modern digital DLSR technology, so I bought camera equipment that performs far better than I make pictures. The equipment from Ivor Ginsberg arrived in three boxes. Germany. A Paterson Ex...

This is a writing page to complement my photograph page on www.basilARTinc.com. My Travels: Another Two Days in My Bunk. February 21, 2014. I started a course of antibiotics and took anti-inflammatories to control my fever. At least I was not nauseous. I just lay in my bunk alternately sweating in my shorts on top of the duvet then shivering under the duvet and two blankets with my thermal underwear on. I left my bunk on the morning of day 13 on the Vavilov. Of Captain Luis Alberto Pardo. First thing tha...

This is a writing page to complement my photograph page on www.basilARTinc.com. New Batteries and Loading Film. March 23, 2014. Olympus OM-1 with remote shutter release on a tripod. My camera needed new batteries and the film had to be loaded manually. There were a lot of reassuring levers, clicks and mechanical confirmation sounds. My motor winder missed the engage occasionally and just spun. But the manual winder on top of the camera still worked. Janvier and I did capture a proposal at the end of the ...

This is a writing page to complement my photograph page on www.basilARTinc.com. January 23, 2012. Whenever I was faced with making a public speech as a child my mother always used to tell me to imagine the audience in their underwear, so that I would not be intimidated by them. In those days it was safe, but imagine today. Those that are cross dressers would vie for attention with those that wore no underwear! Speech on the Occasion of the Opening of the Alberton Hellenic Hall 2 December 1967. Alberton i...

Stories about our time in the field. 01 September 2013 – more sea time. Bull;September 29, 2013 • Leave a Comment. It’s that time of the year when lots of pelagic trips run and today saw another Zest for Birds pelagic trip departing with Trevor co-guiding with Peter Ryan, Alvin Cope and John Graham. The trip out into False Bay was fairly quiet, but we rounded Cape Point, we soon started encountering White-chinned Petrels and Sooty Shearwaters in reasonable numbers as well as a few Shy Albatrosses. We had...
