The Hard Bop Homepage Blog: June 2008
http://hardbophomepage.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 26, 2008. Of course we all know that there was great Hard Bop in Detroit. The list of names speaks for itself, Barry Harris. Elvin, and Thad Jones, Pepper Adams. Etc But even as a die-hard-bop fan I was surprised to learn, on one of my forays through cyberspace, that Berry Gordy at Motown released eleven albums of jazz on one of his subsidiary labels. As Mr. Spock would say . . . fascinating. Music blog. While maybe not keepers, worth a download or two. Monday, June 23, 2008. Have been abl...

Saturday, October 11, 2008. The Jazz Project - Fangs. S last album came out on Verve in 1999. Reissues? Well, now that the Blue Note and OJC catalogues have been pretty well exhausted, what remains might be interesting (Chess, Duke/Peacock, etc.) but I don't think there are any hidden Sidewinder. S or Soul Station. S left out there. (Unless you count Sonny Criss. S At The Crossroads. Which has been released in Japan.). And Stacie McGregor's Straight Up. As a fan for years of Grant Green. Is, pure and sim...
The Hard Bop Homepage Blog: Isaac Hayes
http://hardbophomepage.blogspot.com/2008/08/isaac-hayes.html
Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Is still one of my favorite albums . . . ever . . . in any genre. There have been numerous versions of Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" but I wanted to share with you one of my favorites. It's from the 1974 album by Maynard Ferguson MF Horn 2. In terms of fusion/big band sessions from the 70s, this has to be near the top of the list in terms of both song selection and solos. The opener, "Give It One," is probably the best Ferguson track from the entire decade. Have a Nice Decade.
The Hard Bop Homepage Blog: August 2007
http://hardbophomepage.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 16, 2007. One of the all-time greats passed away today, Max Roach. The brilliant drummer, composer, activist and educator. My first exposure to Max was on Charlie Parker's recordings. What struck me immediately was the incredible precision of his playing. Unlike other boppers like Bud Powell. And even Dizzy Gillespie who could, at times, sound very sloppy, Max's playing always seemed crisp and precise- like Bird himself. But it was his recordings with Clifford Brown. And away it went....

Film Score Fanatic: January 2013
http://filmscorefanatic.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 12, 2013. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982). Though there have been some great scores from composers late in their careers, one thinks of Dimitri Tiomkin’s Guns of Navarone. Or Bernard Herrmann’s Taxi Driver. Perhaps no composer had such a fruitful later career as Miklós Rózsa, who scored films like The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. And Eye of the Needle. At the end of his career. But the score of his that is perhaps most impressive is his last, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Is an incred...
Film Score Fanatic: December 2014
http://filmscorefanatic.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 31, 2014. My first exposure to this classic Max Steiner score came via Charles Gerhardt’s incomparable RCA recordings, in this case the album called Captain Blood – Classic Film Scores for Errol Flynn. In addition to his swashbucklers penned by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, there were also suites from a couple of his Warner Brothers’ westerns written by the great Max Steiner, They Died With Their Boots On. And my favorite, Dodge City. Or Steiner’s The Fountainhead. View my complete profile.

Film Score Fanatic: Charles Gerhardt Redux (1972/2010)
http://filmscorefanatic.blogspot.com/2012/12/charles-gerhardt-redux-19722010.html
Wednesday, December 26, 2012. Charles Gerhardt Redux (1972/2010). Compilation by Silva Screen to understand how impeccable those early recordings were and, in my opinion, have yet to be surpassed. And . . . although I know this has nothing to do with the music, the new packaging by Sony is pretty lame. Back in 1972, the first album recorded by Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra was The Sea Hawk: The Classic Film Scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. 8211; Original Version. Gone With the Wind.
