In early summer birds are raising and feeding young and this is a good time to see barn owls that hunt in the afternoon when they have young. The swallows are first to think of leaving and the martins, warblers and other migrants begin to move out from late August into September. There are good numbers of frogs and toads, and common newts have also been seen. Of the woodland butterflies, the speckled wood is a speciality and is seen throughout the summer. Moths and other insects, spiders and arthropods are present in large numbers but we have not yet done surveys in this area. Since 1981 the wood has been lightly managed and open to the public. The trees have grown noticeably, new ground flora and animals are recorded each year and it is now thriving Chiltern woodland.
