harrietbicksler – Pieces of Peace
https://harrietbicksler.wordpress.com/author/harrietbicksler
Just another WordPress.com weblog. September 22, 2016. Stuff I’m Thinking About, Part 2: Lessons from Germany. Two more of my blog post fragments combined into a single piece. View of Passau, Germany from the Veste Oberhaus Castle grounds. I’ve written before about my thoroughly German heritage. One of many quaint side streets in Passau. Having been persecuted for their beliefs back in the 16th century. September 20, 2016. Stuff I’m Thinking About, Part 1. What do you do when faced with choices you don&#...
Makanalia and One Missionary’s Legacy – Pieces of Peace
https://harrietbicksler.wordpress.com/2015/07/28/makanalia-and-one-missionarys-legacy
Just another WordPress.com weblog. July 28, 2015. Makanalia and One Missionary’s Legacy. She also talked about what my father did as a miracle. She remembered that the rural roads (if they could even be called roads! Just that morning at church, my Sunday school class had been discussing an article from Christianity Today. Entitled “The Surprising Discovery About Those Colonialist, Proselytizing Missionaries.”. This entry was posted in Brethren in Christ World Missions. The Neighbors’ Flag. Daryl, I thin...
The Neighbors’ Flag – Pieces of Peace
https://harrietbicksler.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/the-neighbors-flag
Just another WordPress.com weblog. July 13, 2015. The Neighbors’ Flag. Last week, Dale and I watched the ceremony when the Confederate flag was removed from the grounds of the state capitol in Columbia, South Carolina. We were deeply moved and celebrated along with many others the removal of this racist symbol from public property. Despite arguments that the Confederate flag is a symbol of southern heritage and history, and therefore deserves a place of honor, it is abundantly clear to me that the flag i...
Endings and Beginnings – Pieces of Peace
https://harrietbicksler.wordpress.com/2015/07/01/endings-and-beginnings
Just another WordPress.com weblog. July 1, 2015. Yesterday we buried my father-in-law, John Bicksler, and yesterday also marked the end of my almost-23-year career with the Pennsylvania Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and the beginning of full retirement. Two endings and one beginning; emotional overload. Three of Dad Bicksler’s 12 great-grandchildren at the grave site. My retirement certificate signed by the secretary of the PA Department of Human Services. So what does come next?

KGMom Musings: June 2015
http://kgmom.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
What I'm thinking about these days.politics. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. This is a story about a tree- not a grove (as in the lovely Welsh song The Ash Grove)- but just one tree. When we moved to the house we live in- some 30 plus years ago- it was a barren place. No trees, just mounds of dirt from dug-out basements and other construction detritus. The wind would blow out of the northwest- sometimes quite fiercely, making the master bedroom the coldest room in the house. So we set about to plant trees. This ...
KGMom Musings: On This Day
http://kgmom.blogspot.com/2010/07/on-this-day.html
What I'm thinking about these days.politics. Tuesday, July 20, 2010. While it can be heard daily on NPR, I usually miss that brief broadcast, so a while back, I signed up for daily emails. Now, I get a dose of poetry and a reminder of some noteworthy event or birthday each day. On the same day, but centuries earlier, in 1692, Rebecca Nurse, Susannah Martin, Elizabeth Howe, Sarah Good, and Sarah Wildes were hanged for witchcraft. While the Salem witch trials. See why I like the almanac? Now, I tell them, ...
KGMom Musings: May 2015
http://kgmom.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
What I'm thinking about these days.politics. Monday, May 25, 2015. My Country, 'Tis of Thee. When my parents, brother, sister and I returned to the U.S. in 1960, the United States was as shining an example of democracy as one could imagine. We had helped win World War II, we had saved Europe and perhaps western civilization. We embodied the Yank can-do spirit. Give us a problem, and we could solve it, fix it, rescue it, save it. And then came a decade of unraveling. Like many Americans, I was entranc...
KGMom Musings: The Annual Letter
http://kgmom.blogspot.com/2010/12/annual-letter.html
What I'm thinking about these days.politics. Monday, December 13, 2010. Yes, you know what I mean, don't you? The annual Christmas letter. This is a tradition that I maintain, and that my husband.perhaps is less enthusiastic about. My contention is that it helps me keep up, ever so briefly admittedly, with family and friends- particularly those who are far away. And then came blogging- and Facebook. Is it still necessary to keep up with far-away folk? I contend it is, and here's why. And I will look forw...
KGMom Musings: Portrait of a Man
http://kgmom.blogspot.com/2015/06/portrait-of-man.html
What I'm thinking about these days.politics. Saturday, June 20, 2015. Portrait of a Man. In recognition of Father's Day- I offer this brief portrait of the life of a man- he is my father, David. David was born in 1919, and is the baby in this photo. While he was born in Pennsylvania, when he was less than 2 years old, his parents, along with him and his older brother, went as missionaries to southern Africa. Of course, the tidy way in which I present this information lacks nuance and detail- of which the...

KGMom Musings: No U-Haul behind a Hearse
http://kgmom.blogspot.com/2009/01/no-u-haul-behind-hearse.html
What I'm thinking about these days.politics. Friday, January 09, 2009. No U-Haul behind a Hearse. Photo from the Internet- I don't really think someone tried to "take it with him"! The title of this post may make you scratch your head a bit- but I looked around for an appropriate quote to get at the idea of possessions, and every one I found just seemed lame. Says it so much better. So, why this rumination of possessions? Yes, my friendly Internet give-away site). We're interested in the table and chairs...
